8. Do you feel that computer games can be of any use in education?

Yes definitely. My post graduate dissertation is on the subject so I'd have to say that really :D

9. Do you feel that computer games are indeed a valid cause of violence in society nowadays or instead used as a scapegoat?, please state briefly any comments you many have on this matter.
I think they can tip some people over the edge, but no more so than television, films, comic books, music, illicit drugs, arguments with friends etc can do. So really they are often scapegoated but the media and society love to do that, especially with something new which gaming still is (at least in the mainstream). In other words, people prone to violence are going to do it anyhow. Rational, non violent people won't no matter how much they play violent games.

Scapegoat. It appears to be a basic human need to find explanations for things which are difficult to understand, like acts of violence. In the absence of a better explanation it appears that Computer Gaming is the nominated fall guy.

Thanks again for taking the time to fill in the questionnaire.

Your welcome. Now get yourself down the pub and start behaving like a proper student. ;)

7. Do you feel that computer gaming has changed your life in anyway?, if yes please state briefly in what way(s)

When I was younger I went through a bad patch for various reasons; computer games gave me something to sink myself into to take myself away from this. As a result of having outlets (this and music), I passed school and 6th form, and now have a fulltime job, rather than taking the easy route and becoming a dropout.

8. Do you feel that computer games can be of any use in education?

Yes. Like any tool, the trick is making it fun. Games like MMORPGs or RPGs can be used to help, and indeed have been used to help language skills for example. Any form of stimulus can be used for teaching if tailored and considered properly.

9. Do you feel that computer games are indeed a valid cause of violence in society nowadays or instead used as a scapegoat?, please state briefly any comments you many have on this matter.

Yes, absolutely they are used as a scapegoat; violent/disturbing images have been available for absolutely years; however these didn't cause the disintegration of society as we know it; as some have argued of video games. If someone is unhinged enough to re-enact something they see in a video game; an item which is obviously not ill, then there are obviously further mental or other such issues which haven't been dealt with. Games could act as a catalyst for someone with an existing problem, like any form of media be it music, games, or video etc, however only an already existing mentally unstable person would act on this; otherwise a sense of moral compass/reality should kick in.
If this is not happening, then there is a deeper rooted issue (such as the inability to completely distinguish reality from irreality).

There have also been studies which suggested certain areas of the brain are stimulated by video games, dependant on type for example; however as they are less dramatic or 'newsworthy'; positive video games stories are reported far less often, and it is only the negative stories which reach large scale news.

Yes

Computer games do not cause violence, people who are poorly brought up can find influence in computer games, just as they can in watching a film or even the news. But it is their bringing up/poor state of mind that caused the violence.

It turned me into a geek... It gave me a further interest into computing as a general subject matter. Also it developed my interest in Home Cinema systems. It has had an adverse effect in recent years of limiting my real life social activities, but then I think I have a better bunch of Online mates than Real life anyway.

There are always going to be crazy people out there, and crazy people by their very nature do crazy things. Its possible that violent music, films or games may act as a catalyst to a crazy person going mental, but lets be honest, they were crazy to begin with. My Gaming kill count is well into the millions my RL kill count still stands at 0 and I have been killing things in computer games since I was 3 or 4

Yes. If it wasn't for games I'd be better at playing the guitar, spend more time in the pub and watch more TV.

8. Do you feel that computer games can be of any use in education?

Yes. There are many educational games around already.

9. Do you feel that computer games are indeed a valid cause of violence in society nowadays or instead used as a scapegoat?, please state briefly any comments you many have on this matter.

I don't think that games cause violence but they could trigger people who have violent tendencies to act in a violent manner. Then again so could watching TV, being shouted at, participating in sport or any other stimulus in everyday life. I don't beleive that people are any more violent these days than in times past it's just that it's reported more frequently in the media.

People with violent tendencies will be violent regardless of whether games are available or not.

No. Anyone who plays GTA and then decides to go steal a car or kill a prostitute has mental issues.

Thanks again for taking the time to fill in the questionnaire.

No problem.

NO, they may supply you with no end of ideas on how to do it, but those sort of actions are of a small percentage of the gaming community, it would be like blaming the the italian job(other crime moves are available) for the actions of bank robbers

Thanks again for taking the time to fill in the questionnaire.

They may not be a good idea for people who are already violent or unstable and people should not be allowed to purchase/play games unless they meet the age rating requirements, but no I don't think they are a valid scapegoat. Irresponsible parenting, poverty, and getting in with a bad crowd (gangs etc) are the main reasons for violence in my opinion. Like tv and music, video games are an easy target for people who want to find something more tangible to blame than the actual causes.

I've probably stopped doing stuff I'd otherwise have done with my spare time, but that coincides with moving away from an area where I would usually do such things.
I'll rephrase and say it's replaced certain activities I'd do in my spare time, rather than prevented me from doing them.

Killing and acts of violence against virtual people again and again can have de-sentisizing effects on the psychologically unstable - more research required in this area tbh
