Computer hanging up...again :(

Hi guys,

I posted a few weeks ago about system hanging up and having a faulty ssd causing the crashes. Well i RMA'd the ssd and got a new one back (thanks OcUK :). Ditched my old 2 hard drives and formatted my big game hard drive clean (yes all 300 gb of games gone!) and installed win7x64 on the ssd again. Flawless installation, installed updated drivers and some benchmarking stuff and a few games to test.

All was working fine after days of gaming sessions and then bam, got a system crash (audio was in a loop still i could hear) while playing a game. It was just like 5 minutes after a cold boot, so i thought may be overheating of the cpu so i restarted and had core temp up (all temps at mid 30s) and then again 5 minutes in system hang no BSOD or anything but just a freeze up of the game - Alt+tab works for a few seconds after and then the whole screen freezes. Downloaded unigine benchmark ran it on ultra settings twice just to check temperatures and to see if it crashes but nothing. Played the game again for hours after and no crash so i thought its all good. Then again yesterday downloaded crysis 1, cranked up everything and then 5 minutes in - system hangs again.

Not sure what the problem is right now but i think the following may be causing this. In descending order of likelihood:

1. faulty ram?
2. PSU failing? (using Corsair TX 750W ATX SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-750TXUK)
3. Motherboard + cpu problem? (bios is up to date)
4. HDD connection failing?
5. windows 7 cd installer not installing properly on to ssd?
6. GPU failing? (temps during benchmark don't go higher than 68C)
7. Software problem? New AMD drivers, everything else is from motherboard cd)
8. Peripherals causing problem? Only have a new headset, keyboard and mouse.
9. virus?

Could someone please share some process of elimination kinda scheme for me to find out what's wrong and how can i check? Really bugging me.

Note: Bios is upto date to the latest revision and all of this was on factory default clocks, no OC.

thanks

I'd suggest running memtest, to try and rule out a ram fault. RAM faults can cause all kinds of crazy crashes and hangs.

Win 7 should install fine onto an ssd. If the ssd/hdd connection was wrong, I'd have expected the install to crash...

Have you enabled BSOD? When crashes occur the behaviour is black screen/crash/reboot with no further details.

One enabled, or even if it is, download BSOD Viewer which will give you the cause.

Check the event logs and give us the bsod error code. Hopefully it will allow us to narrow it down.

Start > control panel > system and security > administrator tools > event viewer.

Then select windows logs on the left side bar. Last bsod will be labelled as error.

Edit: or yeah just download bsodviewer for an easy way.

Check Memory Dump is enabled:

Right Click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Settings under 'Start-up and Recovery'

Set 'Write debugging information to small memory dump

Install BSOD Viewer and run it next time it happens - this should give you details and error codes which you can Google!

Unplug your dvd drive. What's on ide port 1?(dvd drive perchance?)

The windows update failure one run the update troubleshooter to see if it has solutions.

0x80000000000000 bsod doesn't yield much answers on google

tried setting the power control to 20% in amd/catalyst/overdrive settings? might help if its the gpu lockingup

mine needs 20%

OP, this is what I would do.

Only proceed to next step once previous is tested, it's time consuming but it's the only way you'll find the issue.

1) Run Intel CPU diagnostic tool

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool-64-bit-

2) Run a virus checker, I personally use Microsoft Security Essentials

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/security-essentials-download

3) Update AMD graphics driver and Intel chip set drivers. Intel detect utility below.

http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect?iid=dc_iduu

I would also install Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver if not already done.

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/search?keyword=Intel®+Rapid+Storage+Technology+(Intel®+RST)

4) Put the computer to stock, timing voltages everything, write down on paper what your bios setting were previous however.
5) Run the computer on the OS drive only, unplug all other SSD/HDD's.
6) Update the bios is not already done to latest stable release (but not beta at this stage)
7) Disable the on board Intel HD graphics.
8) Re-enable HD graphics, physically remove graphics card and run from motherboard.
9) Put memory at 1333mhz with default timings 9-9-9-24, and 1.5v
10) Run one memory simm only (single channel), switch memory if issue still exists.
11) Find a replacement PSU to test.
12) Install windows OS on a totally different drive, keep the SSD with OS so it can be replaced back easy.

One step at a time only, and only move to next step when your confident the issue still exists.

Right so what i have done so far:

1) Run Intel CPU diagnostic tool

Did it and it all passed.

2) Run a virus checker, I personally use Microsoft Security Essentials

No viruses found

3) Update AMD graphics driver and Intel chip set drivers. Intel detect utility below.

Amd drivers were update and the intel chip set driver utility did not detect any drivers at all. A manual search was only showing me intel motherboards.

I would also install Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver if not already done.

Was installed already.

4) Put the computer to stock, timing voltages everything, write down on paper what your bios setting were previous however.

Done.

5) Run the computer on the OS drive only, unplug all other SSD/HDD's.

Did that and the windows were booting fine

6) Update the bios is not already done to latest stable release (but not beta at this stage)

I am on revision f6 which is the latest for the mobo

7) Disable the on board Intel HD graphics.

Did that before i posted my original post and the crash happened after it was disabled so i have left it disabled ever since.

I also disconnected my dvd drive and installed fresh chipset drivers from gigabyte's website.

I also limited the amd overdrive power limit to 20% and went to manual fan control.

For the duration of the burn tests/benchmark and gaming session, i did not get a crash. I will keep on testing and report back once all bases are covered.

Thanks again to all who chipped in. :)

Arclite, pleased you have done above, and computer appears stable so far.

If computer stays stable for at least 3-4 days, then very slowly put things back to as they were.

Personally I would keep GPU to stock speed, but gradually increase your CPU overclock, again small steps 100Mhz at a time, make sure everything stable for a few days before increasing. The ultimate test of a computers stability is always just to use the computer.

Once your happy with CPU speed, then look at RAM timings. I'm a personal fan of reducing memory timings, but not increasing RAM speed as I believe it can overheat memory and shorten life, and I certainly never over-volt memory. There are some exceptions however such as Samsung Green that had huge headroom, but for most RAM overclocking is not worth the trouble.

Once all above is done, then look at overclocking your GPU again.
