Ok, this problem is really making me rage, because if in the morning I put it into standby, the computer will stay like that until night when I get back from uni, but if I place it in standby before I got to bed, it ends up waking up at stupid o'clock every night

Any idea what is triggering the computer to wake?

Checked the power settings in control panel? There's a tick box for wake on LAN or something similar to that. Sorry I can't be more specific it's been ages since I last used Windows. :o

Windows updates do it sometimes to my PC. Backups can do it. Also, scheduled tasks can be set to wake the machine up, so it's worth checking through those.

As above, go to your network adapter properties > configure > power management > untick the options in there.

Thanks all, yea media center was schedules to wake the PC up.

I've never really looked at task scheduler, made me realise my Windows install is almost 12 months old, time to re-install me thinks!

I had a machine wake up due to Media Center at something stupid like 01:27 every day!

Unticked the box that said "wake computer to run this task" and it's been fine since :)

Why do you need to reinstall? I'm guessing you've got Windows 7 installed? Gone are the days of "needing" to reinstall Windows!

no need to re-install windows as often as yiou used to have to, though I needed a re-install due to a crash whilst installing some drivers that no amount of messing would 100% fix. So I got an ssd!

Yeah, it's usually always Media Center updates that cause it.

As for reinstalling Windows every so often, always wondered me why people bother. Just don't install crap in the first place and try to keep the system clean.

I don't install crap. I remember with Windows XP the system used to slow down after like 6 weeks and got BSOD's quite a few times, then needed re installing.

Windows 7 seems to be running slightly slower now.

If anything, Windows 7 should run *quicker* over time, as it learns what you use and makes full use of your RAM for stuff like Superfectch - assuming you haven't disabled it!
