I installed a new new heat sink (noctua nh d 14) on my friends computer after his all in one watercooler pump packed in. He could post to windows before but had warning sounds frmo the cooler so he kept ift off since.

Unfortuantely his case didn't have rear access to the cpu backet on the back of the mobo. Which was fine, so I took everything out (gfx, mobo etc) unplugged it all to install the heat sink.

Everything went fine and it posted and went to bois so I could check the temps, again this was fine at 28 idle.

Then the screen went black randomly and wouldn't post. Restarted numerous times, but still nothing. Reset the cmos, nothing, tried each Ram stick in pairs, nothing, tried both cards by themselves (285 gtx sli), nothing.

I then noticed that the graphics card fan wasn't spinning up properly, and only moved when I gave it a helping start. So I then tried the other card and it does exactly the same thing???
Tried the other pci-E power lines and still the same.

I've got no idea what to do now? psu problem?

I've not seen this before and I'm pretty stuck as to what it could be.

specs
i7 920
285gtx x 2
6gb patriot RAM
2HD in raid
750W psu (can't remeber brand think its corsair)

any ideas please. :)

You got any other graphics card you could try out? Pretty weird how it all happened, sounds like the PSU as i doubt 2 crads would blow at the same time. id take it all apart again, annoying i know but id do it anyway and just double check everything and stick it back in if it still happens then try and get another graphics card,if it still happens with that try another PSU if you can ,maybe you could let him borrow yours for the job. if that all fails its the motherboard or ram but its probly the PSU i reckon,im sure others will steer you in the right path.Good luck!

Yeah, I reassembled it outside the case on anti static bag so I could access everything better. Still the same. I think psu or mobo as you say. Will have to try my psu.

DO NOT put the mobo on the anti static bag! Parts are protected inside the bag not on it. Your better off putting it on a cardboard box, the one the mobo came in is ideal.

I would reseat all the power connectors 24 pin, 4/8pin aux and the gfx card ones if they have them.

I would initially lean towards the PSU too, you can trick the PSU into powering on by using a paperclip to short 2 pins in the block and then use a multimeter to test voltages. Far easier to swap it out for a known working PSU though.

From practical experience i would say the mobo is the next culprit. Eliminate the PSU as the prob then we can go from there buddy

Thats the first i heard of that being unsafe to do,is the anti-static bag conductive or something? You learn something new everyday they say:D

Hopefully its only the PSU and not the motherboard as its cheaper to replace,if its under warranty then its all good i suppose but still really annoying to wait.I'll keep my fingers crossed for you guys, good luck!

The bags are conductive, they form a faraday cage to get the anti-static effect. It's a common mistake, people just assume the bag is anti-static they never stop to think why it is lol

Then i have been very lucky in the past then lol.:D

Can i have your lottery numbers for next week then? ;)

I'm hoping it is just the PSU. It is possible that the PSU was on it's way out and not supplying enough juice to power the water pump ontop of everything else, which would lead to overheating.

I doubt the OP want's to swap the heatsink back over after all this gip if that is the case though. Are any of the parts still under warranty?

I did reseat the hsf already. good point about power on the water pump. Will check pump on my psu power and see if it goes. Will be around his house later, will keep an update in how it goes.
