Thoughts would be great.

My wife turned the computer on, fans spun up but wouldn't boot, this does occasionally happen, just have to wait until it hits the bios and have to reset the memory xmp settings and then it's fine again for months.

However this time my wife turned it off at the socket and it's not turned on since :( .

Power button on case does nothing, tried the power header pins and again nothing.

Replaced the psu, still nothing.

Tried to power it on with just psu and motherboard, but no power again.

Plugged everything back in, cpu, ram etc and still nothing.

So I feel its the motherboard, but opinions would be great, don't really want to keep chasing a faulty part and b560 boards seem to be really hard to find new/second hand.

Cheers

Sounds like it was on it's way out anyway. Have you tried removing the BIOS battery and resetting the BIOS. You can check the motherboard with a multimeter for a short and if that's the case then it's time to give up.

Or a complete new system, shame really as I had no performance issues.

Maybe 14th gen intel, ddr5, I'll have to see how they compare with AMD. Is there a better socket to go for currently for longevity, ie will receive a few cpu iterations?

AM5 should have at least one more generation after Zen 5 (9000), AMD have said it'll be supported until 2027, but we don't know what 'support' means, e.g. AM4 is still getting new CPUs, but they're not really new, they're just higher clocks or whatever.

I'd avoid 14th gen until we have confirmation that the issues are fixed, which might be never.

the 12600k and 12700k comes up at decent similar pricing, and the 13400.
The 12600K is usually better than the 13400, both cheaper and faster and the 13400 may be subject to the manufacturing fault if you get a raptor lake die (B0).

They're not bad CPUs at the current prices, but the 7600 is a strong gaming CPU and you'd get better upgradability.

Yeah that's what I was thinking, 7600 being a good option.

Going to keep my eye out for a decent B560 board for a week or so as I really wasn't having any issues, nice and fast, just the graphics card needed an update at some point, but there we go, can always sell the ram and cpu for ok money and the board for spares.

You can get Asus H510M-K for £65 new and shipped. Not the best board ever obviously (doesn't even have a VRM heatsink), but it'd do the job with a 11600K. Gigabyte H510M-K is even cheaper, but VRM looks incredibly basic (even compared to the Asus H510M-K) so perhaps best avoided.

Edit: there is also an Asus H510M-A for £95, which does have a VRM heatsink.
