Hi,

When I switched on my computer, I found that it wouldn't start up. Upon opening it up, I discovered that the CPU fan wasn't turning, and there seemed to be no hard drive activity. This actually happened yesterday as well, but leaving it for a hour or two actually sorted out the problem. This time it hasn't.

Does anyone have any idea as to what could have caused the fan to stop turning, and presumably the CPU to stop processing?

My specs are:

Intel Quadcore Q6600
Gigabyte P35C-DS3R
ATI Radeon 2900xt
2gb of Cosair DDR2 6400 ram

Try a CMOS reset - just in case the BIOS has gone on strike .
Remove one stick of ram and see how that fairs.

Thanks for the replies, but I didn't really explain the problem well enough in the original post.

When I switch it on, all the fans turn on, the blue light tells me the computer is on, the graphics fan is turning , everything seems ok. However, the CPU fan doesn't turn on like it usually does after a few seconds, and nothing comes up on the screen.

I fear the processor may have overheated when the fan wasn't on, and stopped working, damaging the motherboard in the process. =/

your CPU cannot be overheated as it has factory overheat protection. so even if motherboard is damaged then not from CPU.
leave only cpu in mobo , remove other components like VGA, RAM, HDD, ODD. then try if it mobo gives any beep(s) on startup. if yes then it means that CPU is alive. list of beep codes usually should be in manual of mobo. then put just 1 stick of RAM and investigate futher.

suggestion of changing PSU is also reasonable.
