I'm trying to get my computer to enter (S3) sleep mode, and resume again.

In both XP and Vista, it attempts to enter sleep whereby it shuts everything off momentarily - then half a second later the hard drives start to spin (power light remains off) and it will now not power down the hard drives or awake from sleep mode.

I've had this problem for a while in XP, but I thought it was windows being funny, but in Vista I have the exact same problem. Which is why I'm thinking it's maybe some sort of BIOS or motherboard issue?

I've been through all the power management settings in the bios, which all seem to be correct. Has anyone else come across this issue before?

Motherboard is a Gigabyte K8NXP-9 (Socket 939, nForce4) with F9 (latest) BIOS version.

Would appreciate anyone's help on this

Short answer, it could be anything.

Long answer it is most likely a dodgy driver or a usb device.

Basically when you to sleep and something tried to wake your pc from sleep before it even gets to the sleep state your pc will either wake up, or mess up and neither sleep nor wake but go zombie. Try unplugging as many components as you can to narrow it down. Try updating drivers and closing any background programs you dont need.

I havent been able to get S3 working on any of my pc's since i had a p3 dell... its just hit or miss sometimes.
