Have been browsing these forums for a while now so i hope you can help me.
Ironically have been considering a new set-up but concluded at this moment i can neither afford or justify it.
To the problem in hand. (4 years old, shop bought, added 450watt corsair and ati4650 six months ago.)
System: pentium d930, mobo asus, chipset i945, 3gig ram.

Used computer as normal today, put in sleep mode went to use again, lights came on but no screen. Turned off computer, looked inside and booted. PSU working and harddrive active. CPU/GPU/case fan not turning (all these are connected via mobo). So switched comp off, all leads seemed fixed, tried a few quick on/offs. On third attempt case fan started and a couple of seconds later cpu fan started, system booted got error message stating cpu fan not working so comp shut down.
CPU fan was filthy so cleaned it up abit. rebooted and everying working.
Looked at bios to check temp the other day and it was 63c, (hadnt been using system heavily, just surfing).
After this problem, i immediately rebooted and checked cpu temp and it was 43c.

Any ideas what the problem could be. I'm thinking age and lack of care i.e dust build up?
Any help much appreciated
simon

On a side note if i was to build a new set up i.e. low spec AMD would i notice a huge difference in proformance (used for gaming eg l4d,anno 1404, CoD series, fallout3,battlegroundeurope,)

if you havent cleaned out your PC in 4 years, i would recommend that you do

is your security also up to date?

if you do build a new setup, what would be your budget?

do you have DDR or DDR2 ram?

is anything else worth keeping like HDD or optical drives?

Problem started again. Switch on ,leds light up, hard drive makes some noise but no display. No fans turning on cpu,gpu or case. Any ideas what could be causing this?
I did clean out pc when i got gpu and new psu about 6mnts ago. Security is upto date.
As for ram i think ddr2. Budget for new setup 450-550. Ive seen some good AMD specs posted on this forum. Would like to to go ddr3 route if poss. I wouldnt keep optical or HDD. As for OS would use w7.
cheers,
simon

Here you go, add an aftermarket cooler if youre going to OC, other than that youre set to go

N.B. the PSU is on This Week Only, and there is cheaper RAM available but its out of stock atm

I have put together a couple of cheap amd systems recently and can 100% say that yes you will notice a difference over pretty much any 4year old rig ;)

And BOO it sucks when your old rig's start to give you problems :( i suppose they were not meant to last forever, although saying that this rig i am typing on is an nforce 2/ mobile barton setup over clocked to hell and it is still going strong...

Thanks for the specs 95th and RJC. As for keeping the PSU and GPU that i shall do. A new setup isnt an option this month but i shall post specs when ive got the cash.
As for cause of current problem-if anybody has any ideas/solutions please post.
cheers,
simon

re.T!Cybernetic- I have to say it served me well and to be honest i'm looking forward to building my own rig...every cloud i suppose.

i hear what youre saying

as for the problem, you said in your second post "the probs back". did you change something that fixed it ?

could just be the mobo has had it. what i would do is unplug everything give it a good clean and put it back together again. if prob still persists do a RAM test, if thats clear i would say the mobo is kapuut

I didnt really fix the problem just used the tried and tested turn on/off a few times.
Will do as suggested clean and reassemble. I also concur re. mobo is kaput.
Will update if problem is fixed or new spec list.

Corsair 450w was the problem. Yesterday tried everything and gave up. Today as a last ditch effort i dug out the original stock 300w psu. Plugged it in flipped the switch and everything purred into life.
Shocked that the corsairs performance.
Anyway thanks for all your help.
