computer running at snails pace!

i cant work out what it is thats doing this
i did a system restore, removed new programs, even took out the cd rom drive i recently installed but nothing works
it happened right after i'd finished backing up one of my dvds to xvid, when i closed down auto gk and auto gk came up with a load of errors as it closed, then the computer shut down (through windows)
What can i try?

are you sure there are no extra process's running in the background check any services that are running that shouldnt be

as far as i know there is nothin unusual running. i also went into msconfig and checked the startup processes

apart from this is in the wrong forum....

whats the specs of your machine and how much commit charge you using atm?

oh and also CPU usage. Which is the highest app to eat the CPU?

i left it unplugged all night and now it seems fine
