Hi there,

I was thinking of studying for a computer science degree at university as a mature students..

What do you guys think?

I know there are so many I.T. courses out there at the moment that specialise in certain areas however I thought doing the computer science would give me a good grounding and thereafter if I wanted to specialise in a certain field I could do another course...

What are the rates of pay for people who leave Uni with a computer science degree at the moment?

All help and assistance would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Cheers!!!

Don't worry about money. Do what you want to do. Is it not better to have a job you like doing that gives you enough money than having a job you don't like that might give you enough money to enjoy another hobby? You'll spend roughly 1/3 of your life at work, make it count.

What exactly does computer science get you into at the end of uni?

Is it a qualification that will basically get you any job involved with ICT?

I did an honours degree in computer science, was alright if a bit dry. Got a decent job at the end of it though so can't complain

I did a degree in computer and network tech which was a bit more hands on than the CS & networking degree.

Personal preferance really.

You might want to consider something like Computer Science with management, if you decide you don't want to stay in computing you can then focus into the business world. I know some people who did this and some of them became accountants, managers at big firms.

Did Computer Science myself and funnily enough most of my mates didn't go into computer related jobs at the end :)

If you do a CS degree make sure it is at one of the top 5-10 institues in the UK, expect lots and lotss of maths and for it to be very challenging. Do not expect to pick up much vocational skills. You wont learn how to rpogram like a tech monkey, you will learn what it means for soemthing to be computable, what a Turing machine is, Godel's theories, what the Halting problem is, etc., etc.

Set you sites on places like Cambridge or Edinburgh.

No.

Cs will get you into many jobs from investment banking, oil industry, space technologies, high-tec manufacturing, logistics, optimisation, geophysical fields, chemistry, bioinformatics, pharmacuticals.

hmm sounds quite different to mine, we did a lot of machine code programming, exceptionally java heavy with concurrent programming, oop etc, also did the ccna as a networking module and had all the maths side, quantitative methods, algorithms and data structures etc. Loved all the engineering modules with all the formulae, made for very easy marks in the exams.

Also included a year paid industrial placement for 3rd year, which was nice

I did comp sci at Nottingham then went into Management Consultancy - nice variety of work but I think I'll move on in the next few years as the hours can be a killer.

it is a change of career and to follow an interest mainly...

thanks kreee will do :)

do any of you guys that did not graduate from one of the top 5 unis work for a large company? if yes what do you do and how much did you start on?

I realise during this depression period opportunities are very scarce however like all recessions they come to an end at which point my course will be over ;)
