Computer slow to start up, or doesn't start at all

Hi,

I've just started experiencing a problem with my machine. I am running Windows XP. It will freeze during the start up process when the large Windows XP logo is displayed on screen. The little 'scrolling bar' at the bottom will stop for a long time, then maybe start again. It can take over 10 minutes to start and sometimes doesn't start at all. I have to cut the power and try again. It prompts me to start using the last known 'good' configuration.

What could be causing this?

Thank you.

pc is knackered. run chkdsk. if that comes up with errors (which it most probably will), fixes them and the problem persists, run
Code:
sfc /scannow
. if that doesn''t fix it, rebuild.
