Hi everybody hopefully you can help.

Yesterday I left my PC on and went to it at the end of the day to try and switch it off. it would not respond to a keyboard wake nor would the power button on the PC shut it down.

even when holding the power button down the PC would still refuse to switch off and I had to switch it off at the wall to power down.

I came back to the PC this morning tried switch it back on and it is completely lifeless. When flicking on the power on I notice a brief light up of the board and then it goes lifeless again.

Any ideas what could be at fault here??

Usually psu is at fault. Removed the pay and connected to another pc... Which seems ok. Removed all drives and the same issue occurs.
:(

If power button doesn't make PC shut down there's certainly chance of also other things broken than PSU.
Because power button goes through motherboard's circuitry.

My crystal ball also stopped working, so what parts you have there?

MSI x99a sli krait mb, 5820k CPU, 1080ti, 4x Hyperx DDR modules and a 1000w Corsair psu.

All on water.

I don't think the psu is faulty, I removed it and plugged it into another desktop, but only the 24pin and 4 pins on the EPS seem to power the other desktop ok

When I plug back into my pc, as soon as I click the power switch on the back of the psu the motherboard lights up for a fraction of a second and goes dead. I've removed the GPU, all HDDs and other cables (using the power on button from the motherboard) I've also removed all ram (bar 1 stick) I have tried all 4 in slot 1. This exhibits the same behaviour

One last thing you can try is re-seating the CPU and attempting to boot without RAM to see if it powers off again. Failing that is motherboard RMA time if it's under warranty.

just wanted to update you all and thank you for your contribution. it was indeed a motherboard failure. one had fun trying to find a suitable X99a board :(
