computer troubles :(

My computer is failing to boot. I attempted to turn it on this morning but it failed to make a post beep, which it normally does, and the monitor failed to recognise an input. The computer sounds and appears to be running fine; the fans all work, the cd drive spins and the motherboard has a green light. There is no issue with the monitor (I have tested it with a laptop), but i am unable to swap components out to test.

It's been a bit dodgy over the last few days. When attempting to boot, the monitor has failed several times to register an input, but eventually started after a few tries. Over the passed few weeks games have also been freezing occasionally and after closing games the monitor flashes a few times.

Rig specs below:

E2140 @ 2.8
4850
Asus p5k
2 gig crucial ballistix pc6400 (i think)

The mobo doesn't have integrated graphics and i was thinking this sounded like an issue with the graphics card but i wasn't sure if lack of graphics caused a failure of post beep.

thanks for any help ;)

Hi, couple things you can do, when you boot, look at the 4850, it should have 4 diagnostic small red LEDs on the back near the top corner, if theres a problem these will tell you what it is, theyve got tiny writing next to each one to tell you a code, eg D601, if one of em or more stay lit (they should all flash on initial power on) then google the code. If not Id just suggest, if you havent already take everything out and reseat it, cleaning any dust build up. after that youre down to removing components and plugging them into to seee if you can get BIOS POST error codes, good luck

I had this problem a couple of months back it turned out to be 1 of the sticks of Ballistix that had given up the ghost. I would suggest taking out 1 stick, assuming you have 2x1, and trying each on its own see if it posts that way. Also try the above as well.

My 4850 doesn't have any diagnostic lights unfortunately.

I've just tried switching the RAM sticks round and that had no effect.

not switch them round, take one out, then boot it up with one in, if you still have probelm take out that one and put other in and try again, it may be one of the sticks has failed

Still cant work this one out. I don't think its the ram as I have taken them out leaving either in. I think it might be the gfx card. Would there be a post issue if there was no gfx detected?
