Computer turning itself on randomly?

Ahoy,

I am currently on holiday and at two occasions this week that I have logged onto MSN I can see that my computer is on (by the logged on several computers thing).

I have had this computer for about 2 months now and this has never happened before. I have been on vacation earlier and it didn’t happen then. There have been no changes to my computer recently either.

It's at random times it has happened so I'm not too sure if it's a timer doing it.
As far as I know from before I left there is no viruses or anything (and I doubt it seeing as I don’t do much dodgy stuff) and there is definitely no one that would have been there to turn it on.

My motherboard is an Asus P5W DH Deluxe.

Any thoughts of what could cause this?

Login to MSN from where you are now and change your password. The other computer may not be on.

He said the other pc is on, I guess he knows this because MSN will tell you the computer name of the pc used to login.

Maybe the "wake up on LAN" setting has something to do with it. Just a guess.

Maybe people have broke into your house and are currently logged into your pc and facebook raping you?

Possibility...

Are you sure that you shut it down, I know it sounds stupid, but hibernating has a habit of waking, esp when the mouse is moved etc.

Also any new programs installed recently?

Infact, maybe because it's late, but I don't understand that, because when I sign in at a different location it signs me out automatically... I would never have know that I was previously logged in.

It's only when I sign out, due to a connection at a different location that I get bumped off messenger and a message saying "You've been signed out due to etc.."

EDIT: yup agree with above advice too, as a preventive measure, please change your password :)

If MSN tells a user the name of the other computer that is logged on and it is indeed the computer he isn't sitting at then fine. But I would still change the password. I'd also install some type of remote connection software for the next time it happens. Either that or unplug it when I'm away.

When did it start doing this?
It's been a few months since I used msn, but I've never known it to give a name or even an IP of where you are logged in, only;

"You have been signed out due to your account being signed in elsewhere"

Or something to that effect.

Hm, maybe I didn't formulate myself properly:p

If you log into MSN on more places at a time it says when you log on 'Your conversations can be seen blabla' on this computer and my computers name. And I know it's been mine aswell since I have had a friend go over both times and turn it off!

Might be but it's weird that it has never happened before :/ Could it still be that when it has happened at two completely random times?

:o

Well I had my friend go over and shut it down by 'turn off' etc. And before whenever I have turned it off it has stayed off. Even for a week without doing this. The only thing I have installed just recently has been the Windows Live Mail program.

BIOS settings can turn the PC on. Power failures along with BIOS settings can do it. Network traffic can also do it if the BIOS is set for it. Modems can also do it.

You didn't mention properly in the first post that you could identify from the MSN messages that it was your PC by name that was on.

Agree with above comments about wake on lan and hibernating, may be best to turn this off in bios to rule it out as it doesn't sound like you are using either

Also, check your PC's event log as it will have entries showing if it was indeed turned on and will show you what time, maybe this will help solve the issue of what's going on

Yea it's my computer that it's logged on to. I'm 100% sure no one else is on my msn, that's just how I noticed it was turned on.

I already asked around if there has been any power failures and it hasn't. But I'll have a look with the BIOS settings when i get back in 3 days.

Good idea, didn't think of that! Nah I'm not using either so will turn it off. It's just so surprising seeing as it has never happened before.

(sorry for the double posting. Tricky to double quote on the phone :()
