My friend has the following system

cpu / processor is amd athlon 64x2 dual core 5000+1.34
motherboard asus m2n32 slI-delux / graphic card 8800gts 512 mb / ram 2gb

When he runs a 3dmark06 test he only gets 5k

Surely something is wrong?

Any suggestions

Most likely: either his card isn't in the 16x lane, or he hasn't got all his drivers as they should be. or both.

what speed is the cpu running at?
in your first post you wrote "cpu / processor is amd athlon 64x2 dual core 5000+1.34"
but im sure that it should be more like 2.6 ghz

He was actually UNDER clocking the computer. He had this set to about 1.3ghz instead of the standard 2.6ghz.

When he tried to overclock this though it reverted back to 1.3ghz when it crashed. Do you think there is something wrong with it? Overheating maybe?

He isn't really overclocking by running it at its standard clock speed ...

Has he got it at the right multi?

Andy

how did he set the machine to 2.6ghz? Perhaps he changed the fsb instead of setting the multiplier correctly (think its a 200fsb cpu with a 13 multiplier) - he should also check the HT multiplier too (think this should be 5, but try 4 first and see if it boots)

[edit] im getting slow in me old age

try clearing the CMOS. This will put all bios settings back to default. You might have to set re-set the time and date and sometimes set the boot priority

Thats the point. He wasnt overclocking, it was underclocking at 1.3ghz. I have tried talking him through the bios but I am not familiar with it.

He could only find the multiplier which was set to 5 i think. I told him to reset to defaults in bios and this went back to the correct speed of 2.6ghz.

But he then tried to overclock to 2.8 or something and this crashed the system. But when it started up again this came back to 1.3ghz instead of 2.6 which is default.

I am not familar with the bios on that mb so wasnt very good at telling him where to look. I could not get him to find the fsb, or whatever its called. The one you multiply by to get the final cpu speed.
