Computer Upgrade

You need to be looking at 750ti's and I think they're 750's.

Are you sure you need a cpu cooler?

If you can do without then there's a bit more flexibilityy to get a cheap case and better gpu/psu combination.

Been doing some more looking and I'm struggling a bit to find something else as I'm not a psu expert and I only know that the xigmatek Asgard case is ok at £26 as my dad has one.

A gtx760 is about £160 and an r9 280 about the same.

Once you throw in a psu is it worth the money when a 750ti will max train sim and be a good match for his cpu in fsx, especially without addons.

To give you an idea, fsx only needs a beefy gpu when you have high AA in lots of clouds (where amd cards struggle against nvidia). My card hardly hits 50% usage with 4x dsr normally and I have lots of add ons.

If it was my dad I would be advising my dad to go down the 750ti route to be honest.

Then you can pick a nice case and cooler.

Does his PSU have a 6 pin connector?

If not, he can't have a dual fan one as they need it...unless you buy an adapter of course.

An EVGA 500W PSU @ £40 would be a good low cost PSU to get the ball rolling.
This will allow for a decent GPU to be added.

How much is the absolute maximum budget?

A NZXT Source 210 or Raijintek case would be a good upgrade as well.

Ok best to ask a few more questions/plant some more seeds in your mind.

What CPU is it exactly? You might still find that certain heavy train sim addons will be hampered by the CPU depending on what it is.

If you can find a way to do without a new case by putting a fan on the side and getting a cheap cooler then you might be able to squeeze in a 760 and PSU.

The problem is that 760 then becomes nearly twice as expensive as that 750ti and isn't anywhere near twice as fast.

However, if you see the GPU as the first part of a later board and cpu upgrade then it's worth it. The problem is that when the platform is upgraded the 760 would be rather out of date.

If it's a one hit upgrade purely for train sim and vanilla fsx then the 750ti is better value for money and leaves room for a nicer, cooler case and even some overclocking (although I know nothing about overclocking core 2 quads).

You need to decide what's best for your dad's circumstances and then you'll make the right choice.

Ill try find out what core 2 quad is when he's next on it. If I'm honest mate he's not a gamer or into any thing GPU heavy and all he plays is Train Sim, Flight Sim and Pinball FX.

Just an update about something else I've jsut noticed about the motherboard is that; I can only see one system fan port and there is no usb 3.0 connection port that I can see

You can get a fan header splitter for that or a molex adapter.

If usb 3.0 is a must you'll need to investigate a pci expansion card.

He already has a usb 3 pci card. Is there a good case which just has usb 2.0 front ports without led fans you can recommend

I can only tell you that the Xigmatek Asgard is ok for £26ish as that's what I picked for my dad in 2009.

It has good reviews on here and one front fan that isn't LED.

Screwless and all black (inc internals) but the front panel is a bit flimsy.

Beyond that you should point your question at the case sub-forum.

Good luck and I'm keen to hear what happens in the end.

I just saw on another website that the; EVGA GeForce GTX 750Ti FTW ACX 2048MB - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-242-EA&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1854

comes with this adapter; https://www.dropbox.com/s/4e7ahin3rfx2iwh/51kw57s65IL._SL1200_.jpg?dl=0

Now on my dads power supply it only has one molex cable but it has two molex female connectors on it; https://www.dropbox.com/s/9pu6dr0z5h9xgy9/2014-12-16 10.21.20.jpg?dl=0 .. Will this work for the card or dose it have to be two separate cables to power the card?

And I was looking at this case; http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-075-XG&groupid=2362&catid=2277 as I really like windowed cases
