Computer will not boot

Hi there, im currently having a problem with me computer atm, when i switch the computer on the system will briefly try to go thru the boot process but after maybe a few seconds it will switch off and automatically try again, by looking at the check process the motherboard does will booting a red led will turn on indicating that there is a problem with the cpu.

My system was bought from Overclockers which comprised of a overclocked bundle which included a i5-760, Asus P7P55D-E and corsair xms memory. As above the computer tries to boot but fails at the cpu but after 5 or so attempts it will boot up and everything is fine for 5-10 mins and then it will crash and we restart with the fast crashes at the cpu check stage, the fact that it can boot up and operate for a small time indicates to me that the cpu is ok but there might be a problem with either my power supply which i might add is getting on abit or there is a problem with the power management on the motherboard.

I was told by my next door neighbor that we had a power surge the other night while i would have been sleeping so maybe this could be the cause but lets just say it didnt come from a reliable source so im still looking at all options, any help or insights would be greatly appreciated before i take this to a shop and getting ripped off for what might be a simple and cheap fix, regards.

P.S I live in Stoke, do overclockers have a maintenance shop?

Tried resetting the CMOS by both moving the jumper and moving the jumper and removal of the battery, tbh i dont think it ever reaches loading of the bios, it literally flicks on for 1 second and then flicks off then a few seconds pass by and it tries to restart but running into the same issue.

That was the first thing i did, tbh i thought the overclock that OCUK had done had finally blown the CPU after 2 years of use, so i removed the H50 and checked the CPU and around the CPU housing to see if i could find any scorch marks but i couldn't, so i re did the thermal paste and reseated the CPU, then i check the whole motherboard for any blown chips or caps and such and could find a mark, also checked the power phase's around the socket and everything looked fine. For the brief second that the power is on all lights and fans spin including the 2 on the H50 radiator and when it does manage to fully boot everything works fine for a while, ive even took apart the psu and cant see any scorch marks but it is hard to see in there even with the case off.

checked the cpu temps in bios?, also, does your case have a panel cut out behind the CPU, anything making contact with the board?

if you think your PSU may be the problem, have you tried disconnecting cd/dvd drives and any additional HDD's you may have attached other than the boot drive, to see if that has any effect.

change bios battery as a precaution, needs to be done very couple of years anyway, it can cause all sorts of problems.

if in doubt take out the battery and re boot, if it boots up you know what it is, they cost 50p

Whether a computer powers on, powers off, etc is all determined by a power controller. Nobody can say what the controller is doing if you do not use a minute of labor to measure six wires. And report those numbers here.

Nothing inside the controller is known without a multimeter. So, every reply is based only in wild speculation. Or buy or borrow a 7 quid meter so that the few who know about the power controller can say what you have.

It never gets as far as that , well i dont think so, I literally press the power switch and everything turns on, ie fans and lights and the motherboard gets to its first check which is the cpu and then it loses power or restarts due to a fault this taking place in a second, when trying it for a hour earlier it did boot up and everything was running fine the temps were all in the 20's with no load but then suddenly it would lose power. I say lose power because no blue screen appears saying there was a fault. Ive check the cut out in the motherboard tray and everything is still cable tied down out of the way of the cpu cut out, ive also tried disconnecting the drives and HDD's but still having the same issue.

Well ive tried it without the battery and its still having the same issue, but thanks for the input.

I never said it was the psu, i said it could be, but it could be also the motherboard and hence why im asking here to see if any others have had similar experiences.

dont suppose you have a (or can borrow) an alternative PSU to test?

do you have more than one stick of RAM installed (if so have you tried booting with just one stick then alternate)

what's the make and wattage of your PSU? does the fan spin up on it?

Unfortunately i dont have a second psu, ive just tried booting with 1 stick of RAM and nothing, it wont even attempt to boot, there is a green light on my motherboard that lights up which is the standby power LED but nothing else now, lights dont light up fans dont spin its like the power cable isnt even plugged in now, so i guess i will have to take it to get fixed now, does OCUK do repairs?

pop out the cmos battery, put the other stick of ram in (on its own), go have a cup of tea, replace the battery then switch it back on. and see if it boots up

bottom of the board, below and left of where it says "sata 6gb) its a Asus P7P55D-E right?

yeah it is that MB but the only place that says sata 6gb is in the middle of the board just below the DIMM slots..

There seems to be a few different layouts for this board
