Hello,
My computer was working fine, but when I switched it on in the morning there was a problem.

I can't describe the problem very well, sometimes when booting it will turn itself off and restart and other times it will just idle and not do anything. Since this has happened, there has been only a black screen showing, so no bios screen or anything.

I took my whole computer apart and put it back together again incase there was something loose or a wire had become lose etc. But the problem still persisted.

Also, upon pressing the power button there's a slight delay, and the fans don't build up speed as fast as they used to.

What do you guys think?

How old is the computer and what hardware do you have inside of it? have you tried removing the battery from the motherboard for a few minutes and plugging it back in to reset the BIOS?

I'm thinking the PSU is on it's way out. Do you have a spare or could you borrow one?

Could be the mobo but i'd start looking at the PSU first. You can remove it from the case and use a paperclip to bridge the green and black wires on 24pin block (google paper clip test). This basically tells the PSU to be on without the mobo connected. You can then power it on or off from the wall socket, if it doesnt power up (fan not spinning is a dead giveaway) then you need a new one.

I bought the computer last April, so I haven't had it that long.

Completly forgot about posting specs :(

i5-2500k
HD 6950
16GB ram
60GB Agility 3
2x Sata II Drives
Xonar DG sound card
XFX 650W XXX
A50 CPU cooler
Antec 300

I think that's it.

Will try taking the battery out right away.

I was thinking it was the PSU but wasn't sure. I don't have a spare or anybody who has one that can power my system.

What mobo?

P67-GD65

Ok, I tried taking the battery out and waited about 10 minutes. When I put it back in the computer loads into bios and everything and asks me which OS I want to load. When I select either of them, the windows orbs swirl around for about half a second, then I get a blue screen error flash up for a split second and then the computer restarts.

I've tried to take a picture of the image with my camera but it's way too fast.

What does this sound like guys?

Take the RAM out and try with a single stick at a time.

Pull the sound card and anything else not actually needed to boot up such as the two HDD's as I assume you have the OS on the SSD.

Do what the guy above is saying then try this,i know this is a pain in the behind but have you tried a fresh install of windows? if you have free space on your main hard disk create a new partition to install it on or if you have a spare one try and install it on that and see if you get the same problems. maybe you got a virus or some random glitch that killed your windows installation. Also,if you have been overclokcing or allowing the motherboard to overclock for you and havent tested for stability properly it could have borked some of your windows files.

Actually one more, if you reset the BIOS then the SATA controller may have swapped from AHCI to IDE or vice versa.

This will cause a big fat BSOD at startup.

Thank you, completely forgot about that. I'm currently writing this message on the PC that was broken so you can guess the outcome :p

Good job I asked on here before I requested the RMA for the power supply.

What do you guys think went wrong?

Had you overclocked it?

You now know how to test a PSU too. Handy as if you RMA it and it's fine your left footing the bill for postage. Happy to see your back up and running :)

That's why we are here :)

Did you use prime95 to test the stability on your OC? I don't mean to insult your intelligence, we've helped get you up and going again but it would be nice to get a lil more from your kit :)

Prime was running fun at 4.5ghz but for some reason my PC didn't like world of warcraft and would blue screen at those speeds.

Didn't test stability of 4.4GHz but haven't had any problems for about a year.

I'd probably be able to get 4.5+ running, but tbh I don't max out the 4.4 I have at the moment. Thanks anyway though ;)
