Computer won't sleep.

Hi All

I'm still trying to get my computer to sleep. I'm using Vista and Windows XP. When I click on sleep on XP or Vista, machine shuts down, power/hdd light off however case fan stays on and GFX fan stays on!

If I select hibinate, the machine just restarts normally. So I fugure it's to do with BIOS?

There are few options for power managment in there. S1 and S3 and Video off mode. blank screen, DPMS (or something) and another option i can remember.

This PC used to sleep. Now wont.

Shuttle XPC SN85 G4 V2.
AMD A64 3400+ 2.4Ghz
2GB DDR 400
X1950Pro
2 x 160GB SATA drives.
Any ideas guys?
Latest BIOS as well. I think

What BIOS setting have you got for power management then? I think mine is set to S1/S3 (combo).

If you can set the BIOS to S3 state - S1 is where you are at the moment - ie fans still running, S3 puts into full sleep - ie no fans running - should all wake up when you press a key/ move the mouse.

Hi

Tried S1 and S3, no difference. PC either restarts or just keeps fans running. When fans are running it is in sleep, just fans on. As I press a button and it comes back on as it should.

S3 is what you want as said above, look for other options once you enable S3...

Okay, will have a look tonight. I also have video off mode: Blank Screen, DMPS VHS or something no idea what that is, HDD power down and a few otherthings...

perhaps try resetting the bios options to default, then set S3 and set the rest of your hardware as you would..

What motherboard have you got?

And did this ever work or have you not actually ever had this work as you want?

It used to work.

Board is made by Shuttle. FN85. The Shuttle is a SN85G4 V2.

On my Shuttle, I enable S1 and S3 in the BIOS and in Windows XP, I have checked the 'enable hibernation' field in 'hibernate' in the 'Power Options' icon in 'Control Panel'. This works for me.

And keep a mug of Horlicks beside your chassis.

So you have it set to S1 & S3, then enable hibinate...I will try tonight, but doubt it will make much difference. It's not a Windows Vista Ultimate issue as it does the same thing in Windows XP Professional.

Tell me, having high end parts in the system, won't cause this as well? :confused:

Looking at the manual, have you got HDD Power down and HDD power down in suspend enabled?

No, I haven't. Should they be enabled? And how many minutes? As it's 1 to 15 minutes for HDD susspend time, I think...

Forget the first one then but enable the second one.

If it's any consolation, I used to be able to go into full S3 mode, but now it doesn't work. Tried all the settings, settings and still the same.

In my search to try and resolve it, I've read a lot of various devices can cause this problem. So maybe USB or driver issue causing it. Try unplugging some non essential USB devices?
