Computer won't turn on at all after a restart (no fans, nothing)

Hi all,

Like many people every year or so I like to reinstall Windows for a fresh image. I just did this. All went well, I installed various patches, drivers, etc.

Anyway. During one of these restarts it hung on the mobo image screen.

Symptoms

- No power at all
- Only light on the mobo is the LAN cable plugged in light
- Other items plugged into the mobo (USB multi socket) DO get power. So it seems power is going through
- When I plug in the power cable to the usb I do get a little crackle.

What I have tried

- Different power cable
- Different wall socket
- Removed CMOS Battery for 5 minutes
- Tried to directly short the power pins using a screwdriver
- Replaced CMOS battery with a new one

Any advice on what else I can try?

As in try the power supply or you think the issue is the power supply?

I mean - some items *are* charging through the mobo USB so the PSU is kicking out some power. I guess that could be a different wattage?

Different voltage
USB is 5v
Try removing cmos battery for longer
Took 30 minutes with mine when everything went dead on me

Will leave the CMOS battery out for longer just in case. Looking at my email this was EVGA SuperNova G2 750W.

Bought in 2014! Can't argue with almost 6 year of use

It's a good psu
How long was the warranty when you got it?
Not sure when they started doing 7 year and 10 year warranty
Though may not be faulty anyway

No idea, I will look once i've swapped it out. Looking at the Phanteks AMP 650 fully modular as a replacement.

There is a Corsair TX for around the same price but it's semi modular and i'm lazy.

I am sure you know this but do not reuse the old cables if you go/have a modular psu,did this myself as was lazy once and had all sorts of problems power wise

The amp has 10 year warranty shows faith in the product
My old ax860i has been running 12+ hours a day for 9 years now
Quality psu is always a good investment

Yeah modular cables the pin out can vary
You need to be certain before doing that

A new power supply has not worked

I have just installed a new Coraise 650 Gold.
Swapped all the cables. 2 x PCIe, 1 Big ATX, 1 CPU

Plugged in the power supply. Nothing.

All that happens when I push the power switch is the PSU clicks, the fan on the PSU turns a teensy bit, then nothing. Also a CPU fan twitches and the GFX lights up for a fraction of a second.

Going to start removing everything

- Removed FusionIO card. Still just twitches
- Removed all but one stick of memory (and swapped them) Still just twitches.
- Removed GFX card. Still just twitches.

Can only be cpu or motherboard at fault then.

I know it sounds basic and silly, but is everything removed that could be construed as a boot device? Is there a USB or a disk in a drive? they can chuck some serious spanners when on a forced restart. Sounds mechanical to me, but it's always best to eliminate all other options (Occam's Razor after all)

Try removing the reset switch pin connection to the mobo.
You never know - i had this stupid problem before and it was the switch.

So at the bottom of my case I have two disk drives. It's a corsair cube as shown below so it's easy to forget about them (they slide in)

Based on your comment I remembered them. Pulled them out. Boots.

All that because a piece of spinning rust was having a hissy fit.

OCUK order cancelled (accommodating as always OCUK)

I'm still raging!!! I'd removed fusionIO card, GFX, M.2, etc)

Yes, after removing one of the disk drives in the bottom of that pic (although that's not my system).

I forgot to remove them as part of my strip down.
