well my pc is not the wellest of pcs i tell ya. It was working all fine earlier today, i then go to play bf2142 about 30 minutes ago, whole time it was going very slow, freezing once, and then when i finally got to play it was forever loosing my connection though i wouldn't get chucked out of the game just pause for around 10 seconds.

So i restart, bad decision! the computer restarted all fine but with no toolbar. hmm i thought to myself i wonder what on earth caused this, so i restarted, iddn't make a difference so decided to come here and ask what people thought but then after having to navigate to firefox folder and click the icon and wait for around 2 mintues for it to load i find out i have no net. Great!

then i see the object dock is loaded but off screen and some reason on the bottom and not the top, so i exit out of that and bam my taskbar appeared.
so i firgured i'd restart and taskbar went but luckily i got the internet back.

I did a quick virus scan with avs for critical areas showed nothing.

Anyone know what i can do to try and fix this? I've been thinking of doing a fresh install for a while now as the computers got rather messy but trouble is a lot i don't want to have to reinstall/get again, and also if i did one of those system restore things whatever uits called would i need to enter all the codes again for windows as lets just say my windows version didn't cost me anything to get so worried i might do something wrong and not have windows?

by the way this happened the other day though no sorted its a bit of a coincidence so might be related.

Best guess is probly backup all your stuff and reinstall windows that should get it back up to speed me thinks.

how easy is this? not looking to spend a load of time doing this though obviously if it has to be done then i will do it.

What about starting in safe mode, people always suggest this thouigh i never know what it would do, any even what button i should press to get to safe mode.

F8 to get into safe mode, but truth be told, windows should be re-installed every 6-12 months, unless you can keep it nice and tidy

Well the first things i would try are as follows.

1) Check the Event Log for errors

2) Perform a full windows disk check on the system drive

3) Defragment the system drive and restart

4) Download, install and run CCleaner

5) Download, install and run Windows Defender

5) Download, install and run something like Spybot - Search & Destroy

If you are still experencing difficulties once you have done all of the above and your system is clean, check the Event Log again for errors.

I myself would perform all of the above before i ever thought about reinstalling Windows, i'm not saying it will solve your issues but it could save you a lot of time and hasstle.

Hope this helps!

although the windows server 2003 machine has been running 24/7 for a lot longer than 2 years now with no problems at all. good OS that.

but no need to format just yet.

check event viewer, sounds like either some files are not loading at startup, could be corrupted hard drive. use hdtune to do a full surface scan to see if there is any drive problems.
