Im sure its a complete coincidence but i installed a CAD program on my computer earlier and when installing there was a noticeable change in my fan noise. I thought it would go away but hasnt and im sure its probably nothing to do with the program.

But ive shutdown the computer and its still the same when i boot it back up.

I loaded up league of legends for a shot and noticed my fps were taking a massive hit and the game was real jumpy so im guessing whatever this noise is is having a fair impact on my computer.

I thought it was maybe to do with the gfx card so i got hold of gpu-z and it says the cards running at 89dC. Not sure if thats the norm or not. The card is a HD7970

So was hoping someone might be able to offer some advice as to how i go about finding the issue?

Thanks

Was 89c during gameplay?

Have you done a spring clean on the pc lately to get rid of the dust.

Sorry last post was wrong, the original was correct. It was 89 not 98.

So i gave it a quick clean out and the temp dropped to about 80 and the noise was still there.

So took the side of as you said and made sure the gfx fans were on which it was. In the midst of doing that though the temps dropped to 63 and the noise stopped so thought it was fixed but its steadily climbing again with the noise back again. Its up to 80 so far.

Looks like its linked to the gfx card for sure, bit no idea where i go from here.

So looking at gpu-z, even idle its saying that the gfx card is under 99% load with the temp 85-89.

I loaded up crysis 2 on steam and while loading the load dropped to 50% and when the game started it ramped up to 99%. In game it was extremely choppy much like league of legends was.

So basically it seems to be saying its under full load despite being idle.

You got any background processes running that would stress the graphics card?

Some way you've got a heavens benchmark running silently in the background or something?! :p

What drivers do you have for the card?

None that are immediately apparent to myself, though granted It could be there and i just dont know what im looking at.

Looking through google one suggestion from someone elses thread was that he got a virus which would maybe explain the timing having installed a new program.

Anyway ive updated the drivers which for now seems to have done the trick and brought the load back to 0% so fingers crossed. I also ran microsoft security essentials but it found anything. Was going to give malwarebytes a go as well.

Have you tried uninstalling the CAD software ? You can always reinstall later, at least it could rule this out.

Yeah ive uninstalled the software.

It was working great last night having out in the new drivers but this morning its back to it again. Running at 98% load on idle.

The noise is from the gfx card fan but neither of those noises, just the norm really for a fan.

Ah, I was just curious as it could have been coil whine. It's quite common on graphics card when they are calculating 3D graphics at very high fps. Something which yours sounded like it might have been doing in the background. Would also have explained the reduced frame rate in Crysis :)

I ran malwarebytes though it found nothing.

Am i looking to have to do a reformat? Its going to cause all sorts of issues of so but then if its needed its needed.

I would say it's looking like it may be the easiest option to deduce whether it's faulty or whether it's something in your system, virus or otherwise.

You could take a drive image before hand, if you have space to do so. That way if a clean install is still experiencing the same problem you could restore your image and all the software that's installed now easily.

Ok so having done a lot more investigation, ive kind of found a fix but only short term.

Having looked around google i found some others with a similar problem and i used a program called process explorer to find out what was actually making the gpu run at 98%.

There was a process called conhost, which when closed down, the computer immediately goes back to normal at 0% load and stays that way until you restart the computer then it starts again though the same fix does work.

So the question is now is how do i get rid of whatever this is for good as none of the AV packages ive used have found anything.
