Hey everyone, I have to carry out a computing project for my Multimeda Computing Degree next year, and I'm struggling to think of one!

I'm pretty poor at software, so that is out of the question.

My strengths:
3D modelling and animation - fly throughs etc
Graphical Design
Computer hardware - system building
Fluent in multi OS environments (Windows/Mac/Linux)
Business
Architecture

ANY ideas would be helpful :)

Thanks :)

Build a giant robot horse out of computers running on multiple operating systems and project a 3d modeled environment around it.

I was thinking of doing a case mod project, where I research on air flow and temperatures etc, then design (3D with animations of air flow etc) then build the case/mod. but I emailed my proposal to the guy in charge of projects at my Uni, and he said theres not really an "end product", i need something to show, if you guys get what I mean?

Whatever you pick it needs to be something you can proudly show to an employer when you graduate that says "I can bring these skills with me". It's all well and good doing something that you really enjoy but you've got to balance it with how it's going to help you when you're looking for employment later on. Obviously I don't know how much emphasis has been placed on this at your uni, there wasn't much at mine, but I think it's important to keep in mind when making your decision.

What exactly are you looking to do when you graduate?

what kind of equipment does your university have for you to play with and what is your budget?

for my group project in my AI/cybernetics degree we are making a robot torso (which was given to us already) play crazy golf completely automatically and have a budget of ~£3000. we were allowed to do any project we could think of with the robot but chose mini golf because of the range of difficulty we could give the project depending on how crap we all were

Sniffy: That's a really good point, to be honest I hadn't thought about the project in that way, but I totally agree with you. Well i'm fairly strong at the networking side of things, and the majority of units I am taking are security based ones. So I guess something in the security sector, such as a security architect.

Reaper 392: It's a uni thats world leading with AI, but I can't say i've ever had any experience with AI, so I'm not sure what i'd be able to do with any of it :/ how much experience did you have with AI before you did the crazy golf?

we've barely started the project. all we've done is choose what we want to do with the robot and get a bit of paperwork done (or in my case, blow the paperwork off till the last minute). we havent done anywhere near enough on AI to complete the project as it stands, but from what i've seen of the timetable for next year it is quite heavily focused on AI

i thought it would be a little bit out of your field, but i figured that throwing ideas around would be somewhat helpful.

*edit*
i'll see if i can find the individual project list from my uni. there were thousands of the things so hopefully there might be something that takes your interest that you could do. sadly i couldnt choose any of them because i'm on a 4 year course so had to choose one of four group projects

Why not use say something like the Unity engine or something that and model a load of computer components and then make a package where people get to build them together and practice overclocking them etc inside the package. Almost like a game etc. Get to use your graphics skills that way the programming is not too bad and you get to use your hardware knowledge.

Ok you are good at multimedia design, and hardware...

Why not build a small GPS attachment to improve the signal quality on mobile phones?

It would need to be small enough to snap onto a mobile armband that someone would wear while running with their phone, to listen to music.

You would then need to create an interface, probably best to start on Android to pick up said device, and then a bit of programming to record and track progress against a map.

So thats your business, hardware and architecture side taken care of, your design would be the interface used to load software on an android (or pc whatever you want), and to then track your movement.

All in all, your programming would only have to show the minimal proof of concept would it not?

This is different, has little to no competition, but does require a fair amount of work.

You could start by looking up who makes the most accurate GPS receivers - Sarantel for example have a testing Kit... You could hook that up to a netbook and take it from there... I think they provide some code to to get it up and running.
