yer i read up a bit about RGB8 a byte for each colour and 3 bytes for each dot, Makes sense. How does the compression work then? If 1 byte is empty just get rid of it?

Compression totally depends on what your using, eg jpeg, png, etc.

Tiff is a container format, not a compression algorithm, it can use one of many compression algorithms, lossy and lossless.
