Hi i am totally new to these core 2 duo motherboards
I have done a lot of research and it seems this is the board to get.
I want to buy it later today with an e6300.
However,i have big concerns about whether i will be able to even build this
computer just something i luckily came accross :

It is very important to notice that the single ATA/133 port available on this motherboard is controlled by the JMicron chip, not by the chipset. This means that if you still have a parallel IDE optical drive it will only be recognized on Windows after you install JMicron’s driver. The problem is that this driver comes on the motherboard CD-ROM, and you won’t be able to install it, as the system does not recognize your optical drive. You can download the driver from the net, however the driver for the on-board LAN port is also on the CD-ROM… The only option you have is to copy the JMicron driver from the CD to a floppy disk or a USB pen drive using another PC. This problem happens not only with this motherboard from ASUS, but also with all other motherboards based on Intel P965 chipset we’ve seen to date. Of course if you have a SATA optical drive you won’t face this issue.

So my question is wil i be ok with an ide dvd on the ds3 does it use the jmicron ? will i need to get a serial ata dvd rom/dvdrw just to be able to install an OS.btw it's snowing out in london :P snowball fight anyone?
If this is the case and i'd have to spen £20+ on a sata dvdrw i may aswell just get a better board that doesnt use the jmicron?

You'll be fine. I was able to install my OS using the IDE optical drive and I've installed on an IDE hard disk. I wouldn't sweat it. At the VERY worst you'd just have to slipstream the drivers into your installation CD.

Theres nothing to worry about, I built my new pc earlier on today using the gigabyte ds3 and installed xp pro just fine off my nec ide dvd writter.
I can't see any mention of jmicron in my device manager but either way it works fine :)

No problems with drivers here either. I have 2 DVD drives and both are recognised with xp 32-bit sp2. My hard drives are on sata, and no drivers needed for windows install there either.

Oh i see i thought it meant it would not recognise the drive before you even think about installing xp i get it now it will work but you must update so it recognises it properly after xp install i think. Thanks guys i will click buy then.
Btw is there anything bettr than the bfg oc 7600 gt for around 80 notes?

How did you install on an ide hard disk on the same port as the dvd drive ?if you dont mind my asking.Hdd and dvd cd rom dont work on the same slot do they?

Ide hard drives and optical drives work fine togeather on the same port :)
I don't think your find anything better than the bfg oc 7600 gt for that price, the next card which is an slight improvement but not by much is the bfg 7900 GS OC for 120.

The jMicron controller works just the same as any other motherboard controller - there are no drivers needed as long as the controller is enabled in the BIOS and set to basic IDE mode.

If you want ot use the RAID or AHCI functions then you will need to load drivers during Windows install.

I agree with the above posters, xp and vista both see my 2 dvd roms at bootup. Also backup software see the drives, so you have nothing to worry about.
