Concerning temp

Just built my new machine and my 4870x2 is idleing at 84oC...not tried a game yet but already worried its faulty at those temps.

case is open and the room is reasonably cold too.

Is this both cores or just 1 as theres a common problem with 1 core being stuck in 3d mode and the other is normal in 2d mode. The new 8.10 betas allow you to use fan control in the ccc so maybe try these out and set the fan speed manually to say 35-40 percent.

its cooled by air, in a Lian Li A05.

its one core showing temps, core 2 is showing 0oC.

anyway to fix this on 8.9s?

EDIT- brough up core 2 and thats a nice chilly 50oC, how do i sort out this other core?

Aye, I have the Gigabyte 4850 1Gb passive, temps were about the same as yours. I blu-tacked an 80mm fan onto cooler directly over where chip is and it brought idle to 43° and load to 63°. Kinda defeats the object I know, but I`ll get a better cooler for it.
