I've just bought myself a Cisco 857w and am having some problems configuring it. I knew it would involve a lot of googling as i've never used one before but i am finding it very difficult to find sites of substance. Does anyone have any links to good cisco forums / guides / tips / faqs etc.

I don't find the information on the cisco site easy to find or explained very well. It's the wireless im struggling with and it doesnt go into detail about the options anywhere, touches on a few commands to use and thats it. I get errors on the page when using SDM for it and even that doesnt make a lot of sense to me.

Even Cisco recommend using the GUI for configuring wireless.
I'd try and get the SDM interface working first. What's the error displayed when you try and access it?

It's an error in the bottom left of the Internet Explorer window, a page error and a few of the buttons don't work, probably because of the error. As i said the SDM is still quite tricky to work out as im still not sure how the rest of the stuff works either. I'm looking for a kind of "this option does this and would be used in this case" sort of guide.

This is the offering on wireless from ciscos site:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products...on_guide_chapter09186a008045d289.html#wp79536

Gives you lots of commands but doesnt expand on them really. Yes i could probably bodge something together from the commands but i want a better understanding before i do it. I've tried googling but i've not found any complete pictures, just little bits and pieces here and there which i don't have the knowledge to put together at the moment.

You'll find this in general because of the range of features you get with Cisco kit.
For the wireless, if you really need to know what each command does, then you could check out a reference guide for an access point. For example:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps4570/prod_command_reference_list.html

I'd still try and get the GUI working though, better to click a tick box and apply rather than wrestle with multiple bridge-group entries.

If you still have problems with accessing SDM, then use IE if you're using something else. Check what version of JRE you're using and that java is enabled. You also need to have popups enabled.

You can get SDM to show you the commands it's applying before it applies them so if you want to understand better, try that and stick the output into a command reference on the Cisco site.
From what I've seen, wireless is pretty badly covered because it's a (relatively) new subject, whereas the majority of the rest of the features have been in routers for years.

The Java that powers SDM is a bit...dodgy.
