I have just purchased a Draytek Vigor 120 to accompany my Apple AEBS (in replacement of my (Sagem) Sky broadband router via ADSL.

Has anybody had experience of configuring a similar setup previously?

I'm failing at the first hurdle, getting the modem to connect to my ISP.

If anybody could give me some pointers, that would be great. Cheers.

OK, I've managed to get it working over wi-fi via the AEBS, however whenever I turn off wi-fi I'm instantly disconnected. When I look at the IP address assigned to my Mac when connected via ethernet it is a 169. address - which I presume is the problem.

Here is a snap of the AEBS window:

What else am I doing wrong? Just to add, ethernet is connected over home plug type adapters too.

Hello, could I please ask how you set this all up, I want the same set up as you've got ( sky/airport time capsule / draytek vigor 120) I can not get this to work , I've e mailed draytek but they think help is e mailing pages freely available on their web site , any help much appreciated

The Draytek requires almost no configuration. You pretty much just need to ensure it's in passthrough mode (which I believe it was by default?). The PPPoE or PPPoA settings for your broadband need to be configured in the router (in this case the AEBS) as that will initiate the connection to Sky through the Draytek as well as provide DHCP functionality to your network

Thanks for replying , I've tried changing settings to what draytek says on their web site but it's not working for me, networks not my speciality, I bought one of these a few years back but sold it because I couldn't configure it , really struggling with this thing , it annoys me that everyone else just seems to stick this in and it works after 5 mins, probably tried for about 3 hours and still not working and drayteks support is pants

If I were you I'd be looking to simply the setup first and progress from there :)

From memory I think the Draytek has a default IP/subnet of 192.168.2.1, 255.55.55.0. If you connect it to your laptop and give your laptop a static IP of 192.168.2.10, subnet of 255.255.255.0 and default gateway of 192.168.2.1 you should be able to get to the Draytek's web interface.

From here check that PPPoE passthrough mode is checked (believe it should be checked but greyed out) and that you have the correct VPI and VCI/Encapsulation settings configured under the Internet Access menu. These settings can easily be found on the net and vary for each ISP.

Once you're happy with that, configure PPPoE settings on your laptop. I've only done this in Windows before but basically you setup a new internet connection and enter your details (username/password for the service) and test the internet. Your laptop should "dial" the connection and you should be able to get onto the net.

Last thing is to introduce your router (AEBS?) in place of your laptop.

Your going to need treatment after you've finished with me cokecan, I need small steps, I'll try connect the 120 to my laptop tomorrow I'm at work now till 11 tonight, I think I'm punching above my weight with this ive not got a clue what half of that message meant, but I'll give it shot tomorrow :)

The Vigor 120 is a pretty simple device, set it up in MPoA mode with the VPI & VCI that your sky router use, beyond that, if it's Sky MER then use the DHCP settings from your Sky router on the AEBS, the Draytek doesn't have much to do with it annd it's better to think of it as an ADSL > Ethernet converter for your setup, especially in mpoa(full bridge) mode. The internet connection going off when you started using wifi was probably the DHCP lease ending, I assume it's 1 hour.

Basically, do not clone the MAC address of the Sky router and copy its DHCP option 60 & 61 settings via wireshark then put those on the router connected behind the v120. That should allow the AEBS to get its own IP rather than borrowiing the DHCP lease of the sky router and it'll be able to renew the lease / stay connected successfully.

Just spent another hour and a half messing about, and now I've lost my time capsule off the network so all wireless down , I'm too far out of my depth with this , don't really understand most of what everyone has said, no videos on YouTube and all the help pages are far to complex , thanks for your help but I've not got the intelligence to get this working ,
