Confirming whether its a dead PSU

Hi all,

PC (in sig) has been running solid as a rock.

Was playing Total War last night and everything was fine. Powered the unit off as normal - went to bed. All standard so far.

This morning however the unit won't turn on. Lights on the motherboard are on but when pressing the power button the fans on the h100i spin about a centimetre and the unit doesn't boot.

I've tried a separate kettle lead and tried at a different plug socket to make sure fuses wasn't the issue however the same occurs.

It's a Superflower Leadex 1000w Platinum white power supply.

With that limited information would you be able to say it's the power supply itself?

Thanks for any help.

Sean

Test it

Basically, short any green and black wire in the 24pin ATX connector. Connect a couple of fans first to give the unit some load

No. so you don't shock yourself :D

One thing you might want to try is resetting your bios.
I had a problem very similar to this and to fix it all i did was remove the battery on the motherboard for about 30 mins.
You will have to reset any overclocks you have running after doing this, but it might be worth a shot.

Hi Snips - it's been absolutely amazing - faultless until this morning.

I was wondering whether there had been a power surge or something overnight but I'm stumped really.

The fact that its not even getting the power into the board makes me think something's gone ping.

I'm not sure I want to try the connector test - think I'll RMA and get it tested properly. Unfortunately I haven't got another PSU for the time being so *sob sob no PC for a while

Glad to know it's been going well :)

Well if your Mrs is anything like mine, she'll be glad you can't use it ;)

I'd try the paperclip test first, that'll confirm if the PSU is the cause or not!

Say I get home and the fans start whirring like normal from the paperclip test.

What would suggest to do next?

Test/switch the cables to the board? The connectors seemed fine when I checked this morning.

Start taking out piece by piece I suppose then.

Then I would suggest resetting the bios, easiest thing to do if you have a working PSU, and there is a good chance it will fix your problem.

Thank you - eager to get home and try it out.

I've been told if a RMA is needed - it needs to go to the manufacturer and well - SuperFlower are based in Taiwan!

For my own gaming sanity let's hope its the BIOS and the battery.

Not sure but by process of elimination, the PSU has power & can provide power to other components (HDD/Cd-DVD), you could look at the motherboard. Let's hope it's just a one off!

Who told you that? I was under the impression that Superflower psu's had the warranty with OCUK (presuming you bought it here) for the whole of the warranty period. If that's not true then I will stop recommending Superflower.

Yes I purchased it through OCUK 11 months ago and was told on the phone to technical support this morning that that would be the case.

To clarify though - Superflower may have a European hub - I'm just presuming that from their website it's going to be in Taiwan. I wasn't told by OCUK that it's going to Taiwan - just back to the manufacturer.
