My Situation:

My modem/router is on the floor below. I want to purchase a NAS device, but I also have a spare router (TP Link TL-WR1043ND)

Can I..

Install the TL-WR1043ND as an access point in my room, onto the same network as the modem/router on the floor below. Will this allow me to surf the internet (i.e functionality provided by modem/router on floor below) but ALSO simultaneously access the NAS (i.e functionality provided byTL-WR1043ND in my room).

I.e will internet/NAS be on the same 'wireless connection'..?

Thanks

The router as access point question gets asked a lot. If you use the search facility on this sub-forum, or just Google ‘router as access point’ you should find plenty of information.

The edited highlights are…

  • Disable the router’s DHCP server.
  • Assign the router a suitable management IP (to fit into your current subnet).
  • Connect the router to the network using one of its LAN ports.
  • Configure the wireless to suit your needs.

If the router has a NAS facility there’s no obvious reason why you wouldn’t be able to use it.

The bit that is a little unclear from the OP is whether he was expecting connectivity between the TP Link and the router downstairs to happen wirelessly, which it wont.

I don't think I need that hopefully. Think of it this way

- I have my modem/router downstairs, on network "SSID1" - If I want to use the internet, I tell my computer to connect to this network, SSID1

- I have a NAS box and a TP link router in my room, on network "SSID2" - If I want to access files on the NAS, I must disconnect from SSID1, and connect to SSID2

- Obviously therefore, when I'm accessing files on the NAS, and therefore on SSID2, I cannot at the same time browse the internet, because the internet is on SSID1

- However if I set up the router in my room as an access point on SSID1, will I then be able to access my NAS, but also simultaneously browse the internet?

Thanks

Yes, with the router set up as an Access point, you can go on the internet and access the NAS. Just think of it as an extension of your current network. You will need to connect both the router and access point with a cable as bremen said or set up a wireless bridge (if the router has that function).

But the modem/router is downstairs, and the TP link router (that can double as an access point) is upstairs - there's no way to connect the two with a cable, too long a distance

Should I see whether I can set up the tp link router as a wireless bridge?
