Confused about overclocking Help!?

I have just recently had a good friend of mine install a Noctua NH-U12P SE2 cooler, and overclock my i7 930 to 3.8ghz. It's very stable and I have had no problems playing both Crysis 2 and BF3 on DX11 and max settings. He has also overclocked my Sapphire 7970 to core voltage 1125mhz, core clock to 1050mhz, and memory to 1500mhz.

Like I said, thankfully there does not seem to be any stability issues etc, and I am very pleased with the results!

I am confused though, as I have used intelburn test and let it pass for hours, whilst gone to the pub, and upon my return have been told the test was successful and the hottest any core got on core temp got was 81 degrees. I have been informed that thats too hot by some, and I have just finished playing crysis 2 for well over an hour, and all 4 cores didn't go over 60 degrees?!

I understand that Intelburn is designed to put an abnormal amount of stress on your CPU in order to gauge it's ability to overclock, but correct me if I am wrong, unless I come home from work each day and leave it running until I go to bed, some 5 to 6 hours later, my CPU should not be an issue, should it?

I am not trying to be smart or clever to those whom have offered their advise and said that 80 to 81 degrees is hot, no doubt it is, compared to other peoples results, all I am trying to find out is, if all I am doing is playing games and NOT trying to stress my CPU every day (which has become kind of addictive LOL!!), will my overclock be OK?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! :D

It should be fine, passing IBT is a good indication of stability. But, like many things, it's not 100% guaranteed. Running games etc wont stress the cpu as much as IBT etc. 81c under the likes of IBT is a wee bit higher than some would be comfortable with, but it's not dangerously high. Factors such as voltages required for the overclock, ambient room temp, your case cooling/airflow, cpu cooler etc will all have an impact on temps.

So, seeing as my friend overclocked my rig, and I do admit that my experience is minimal, what can I do please to try and drop the temperature, whilst at the same time, keeping the stability?

Many thanks!!

Perhaps a better cpu cooler, (what have you currently got). Better fan/s on the cooler. Also see about decreasing the vcore to a level where you can still maintain stability under stress testing.

I only just installed a Noctua NH-U12P SE2, and am also going to be taking delivery of two Scythe Gentle Typhoon 1450 fans, which I was initially going to attach to the Noctua heat sync, and place the two fans from the noctua into the "Door" of my coolermaster cm 830 stacker case, directly in front of my 7970, hoping that they may keep that also as cool as possible?!

I honestly do not have the money for a new, bigger and better cooler, I did the math as best I could right up until this time last week and then after much deliberating and trying to measure the inside of my case, bought the NH-U12P, and I could only keep the side door of my case by removing two of the fans, and removing some of the plastic which held the fans in place!!

As there are 4 fans in total, I am going to swap over the fans when I receive them!! Although I am somewhat nervous about removing the motherboard and all my components to be able to do so!!

id be happy with 81 after 6 hours to be honest ive seen stress testing at over 90 degrees on that chip set. The likely hood in real world you will never peak that high unless you do heavy cpu intensive tasks all day.
