right i have a GA-MA790FX-DQ6 motherboard and it says its "am3 compatable".
From what i bin reading new phenom 2 955 has a ddr3 memory controller, so my question is will it werk on me board or will i have to upgrade to be able to use the bleeding thing?

thanks in advance for help.... lack of coffee and no will to go to the shops has hindered my mind

As far as I know all of the Phenom II CPU's have dual memory controllers, i.e. they can support DDR2 and DDR3. Your motherboard is DDR2 only though, so you'll have to stick with the old stuff.

The problem with using AM3 CPUs on an AM2+ board is that you might need a BIOS update. The gigabyte web page says your mobo does support the 955, but only with the F6 BIOS. So if you do buy it, you might need to flash your BIOS first.

i'm 100% upto date we my bio's so in theory it would werk.

might just buy a 940 and save up for a system of pure winnage... and cheese because without cheese modern technology is useless i hear
