Confused! new conroe speed - should be a quicky.

My new machine (a prebuilt) is here and working perfectly. But being a good geek, just out of interest I ran cpu-z to see what was under the hood. (Ram make, etc)

It said this:

Watching it for a while, the core speed seems to be jumping between 1200 and 1800, with the multiplier changing. Anyone got any ideas why? Is this a version of speedstep or is there a problem?

Turn off speedstep

this is speedstep mate ;

9 x 200 = 1.8ghz full speed
6 x 200 = 1.2ghz speedstep

Thanks As long as the machine isnt set up wrong or anything.
I'm a bit confused though - according to the BIOS its turned off, but the cpus still reading as 1.2.

It shouldnt make any difference, right? As soon as the extra speed is needed it'll push the multiplier up. (I assume it has been, anyway - I'm sure supreme commander would have been slower if it was running on a 1.2!)

it won't make a blind bit of difference mate, as you say if its needing all 1.8ghz it will use it else it will run at 1.2

which motherboard do you have?
