Confused: Slightly Mathematical, but General knowledge should help!

Ok, this is confusing me to the point of madness. It maybe slightly 'mathy' but to someone who knows about this area, perhaps they could fill me in.

First, i'll pose a question.

Two Siblings: One is 19 at the end of August this year(25th I think) and the other is 17 on October 5 this year. Their D.O.Bs must therefore be 25/08/87 and 5/10/89 respectively. (i.e the older sibling is 2 years and 1 month and 10(ish) days older)

The younger sibling receives her GCSE results this Thursday. What school year is the older sibling in?

Now, by working it normally, i'd have said that the old sbling should be due to start their first year at uninversity in the next few weeks.

Somehow though, and I'm assuming its to do with schooling years, he is about to start his second year at university.

Can someone simplify this for me, as it doesnt seem right.

Most people start uni once they have turned 18 (ie if they turn 18 before september - though there is a bit of give, so someone who turns 18 in early september may be in the same year)

Still doesnt make sense.

I was only 3 months into my second year of A levels when I turned 18, yet he had completed his second year at the age of 17.

Surely this must stem from a miss calculation back when he was fisrt due to go to school?

im some schools (private usaully) you can be moved up a year if you do really well, mY sister happens to be one of them

She finishes her gcse's this year and then turns 16 in september.
All it means is she has to goto college as you cant leave school at 15 (this is what I have been told so the last bit could be wrong)

Yup, I understand that, but this isnt the case here. It was normal schooling throughout.

Were are the mothers on this forum when you need them!

older sibling finishes second year of a levels

turns 18 over summer

starts 1st year of uni

turns 19 this summer

starts 2nd year in september

You know some people are allowed to skip years, in some circumstances.

In normal schools aswell.

younger sibling does GCSEs aged 16

starts 1st year of a levels

turns 17

starts 2nd year of a levels

turns 18

starts 1st year of uni

turns 19

starts 2nd year of uni

Both are therefore in the correct school year

I was in the wrong year through most of secondary school. I moved from Norway when I was 12 and should have been put into the middle of the first year. For some reason however I was accidentally put into the middle of the second year, so I missed out on a year there. I made the year up in the end by staying on at 6th form college for 3 years.

the school year runs from the 1st of september through to the 31st of august. therefore, if you are born on or before the 31st of august, you will be in the appropriate year. they're date of birth will be 25/08/87 therefore, NOT 25/09/87.

As such, they will be in the same year as all those who entered university in 2005, and should be entering their second year.

easy to understand, so yes, you are being a little thick atm.

in scotland you can skip first year of uni or the ;last year of school if your smart.
