Confused - Why the hype over Little Big Planet?

Looks like just another platformer, with a few gimmicks thrown in, dont believe the hype

thats what people were saying about the wii and ds.

it certainly looks interesting and it does have a lot of potential. its a damn long time before it gets released though

Well the similarities must be the race to the end and level editing, which has been around since the day dot.

But LBP is heavily focused on sharing content with as many people as you want. Also it isn't about the building the levels then racing them, LBP doesn't feature a Level editor as such, but it like playing the whole game within a level editor, and iirc you can change things on the fly as the game is progressing.

As far as i can see, this is about as original as a game will ever get after 30 years of video gaming. And if the only game is a rather obscure game from 3 generations ago, then i think it is quite good going.
I see your point but there are a lot of similarities. In trash it you could deform the levels on the fly to change the way you progress through them. I think the DS has had a lot of games that were more original than LBP and I don't think games can get much more original without the new input devices Nintendo have used.

I have never played trash it so really can't comment on the gameplay, but i haven't seen many people comparing it to that game.
The problem with input devices is though, every game then needs to be built around them. Even then, input devices are usually just an adaptation of something else. The DS input device could be argued is just a fancy mouse. I haven't played anything on the DS and thought 'Wow originality at its best' though tbh i haven't played a huge amound of games on my ds.

so am i the only one that see's it and thinks "oh look, garry's mod for platformers"

saying that im still pretty excited about it, one of the reasons i'll be getting a ps3 next year.

I just thought of that!

Only difference being that you can mod-as-you-play :)

I cant wait for this, Reason its such a big deal to me is it looks FUN.

No seriousness to it atall, Its a game where you can get online with a bunch of friends and just have a laugh.

Also, The japanese cultural aspects to the game make my belly go fuzzy

And this is why you aren't hyped about it - because you don't really understood what it is and what it represents to the entire video game world today.

Maybe I'm the sort that only really gets excited by deep immersive single player rpgs/fps adventures and it's games like Mass Effect and Fallout 3 that wet my whistle.

That's probably why.

Little Big Planet blew me away more than the vast majority of showings at this years E3. I'm a big platform game fan (Mario Galaxies was game of the show for me) and love the thought of creating levels with friends and then playing them, or downloading other peope's efforts to see what they've come up with.

Simple, cheerful, creative with potentially 100's and 100's of hours of gameplay. It just looks like a game you can chill out to and have fun with. Don't get me wrong, Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Bioshock, GTA4 etc all push my buttons, but we need games like this to keep the magic in video gaming.

Strangely enough, the older I get the more abstract and gameplay centered type games appeal to me. Gritty realism and big guns is becoming rather tired.

Unfortunately. :(

When i watched the mass effect trailer the other day, I couldnt help feeling it was very action packed and lacked a lot of the RPG element. I'm hoping thats just from seeing that trailer, and the game itself will be different. As i was hoping for a KOTOR style next gen game without the star wars story line

Sorry for the Off Topic post :p

it looks fun but dunno if its my sort of game really :/

maybe it should have some overly shiny bumpmapping to persuade the members of ocuk into thinking it looks ok ?

Looks fantastic fun to me, I think devs are catching onto the fact that we like to build/create stuff and this game is using that to the fullest. Top of my reasons to get a PS3 list tbh.
Same here. First thing I have seen that is tempting me to get a PS3.

Yea i think this is gonna be mega! - millions of people creating thier own individual games...theres gonna be a lot of quality gameplay available!!

Also cant wait for echochrome !

Looking good, lots of potential there. Summer 08 release so I should have a PS3 by then. :D

I hope that there are scenarios for each level like a flatout race to the end, cooperative getting to the end, fighting each other and more like that. If every level is just "look what I built" then that will bore me fast.

When I watched the video it actually made me want to get a PS3.

I haven't bought one but might buy one when it comes out. hopefully I'll get a bundle or something.

The WHOLE difference with LBP is that people will be able to competely design their own levels and share them. Take this with all the physics and objects available and you have a vast range of options for creativity.

Personally i see HUGE potential in this and people will buy the game for the fact its cute, cool, funky, err whatever but actually to go and build levels themselves is the coolest part of it.

Ive still spent more time in the Paint Editor in FM2 than actually playing the game, why because tis fun and rewarding. So maybe its nice to see that for a change console gaming can be constructive in different ways.

I think its a real winner in the making as it also appeals to many age groups and not just machinegun weilding fps fanboyz...
