hi. i am connected to my mates max (OSx) and am on vista.

he is connected to me via my second LAN adaptor.

i cannot see him, nor send files to him.

how can i do this. i am running the vista secret admin.

Also through a LAN i have connected my PS3. but it cannot get UPNP through the LAN, and therefore i cannot stream media to the PS3.

can anyone help me?

System Preferences > Sharing

Turn on file sharing, click options, enable share files via SMB. You will need to set the appropriate user names and passwords up here too.

After that set up a shared folder on his Mac that you have access to with the apropriate user and then it *should* be working.

Nope, don't bother streaming to mine as it wont play apple lossless files and I'm not interested in faffing around with transcoding this that and the other to make it work :)

Other than suggesting you make sure UPNP is turned on for your PC there's not much to suggest really.

just manualy forward the ports needed by the ps3

These are:

80, 443, 5223, 3478, 3685

It may work with less than that but thats what i have to do to get my ps3 to work, just experiment with wich ports need to be open and which dont

edit but if you can enable upnp it would just be easier to enable it, in which case which router/firewal do you have?

I'm using the windows firewall. As for router, I am connected to the second LAN port on my mobo. I then bridge the connections for it to share net. Going o line with the ps3 works as does online gaming but not streaming media and upnp. My net coMes from the university of York

Forwarding 80 and 443 to one address is not needed and is a bad idea.

Problems with upnp over a local lan are more likely attributed to the upnp server software.
You do realise you can't just 'share' files using samba like you would to other computers? It is totally retarded but that's how it is.

The easiest way to enable a upnp server in Windows is to share your library using Windows Media Player. It works fairly well.
