Just a quick question,

not sure if this should be here or in network forum.

Anyhow

I have my main rig and also a laptop with a small HD on it, I am about to do a reformat on my laptop and I need to copy some data from the main PC to the laptop (about 20GB)

now last time i did this was wirelessly and it took damn ages as well as using my 512MB USB Data stick

I have the wireless laptop and a netgear DG834 G wireless router connected to main pc through R45 cable.

Is there a quick way of temp connecting 2 computers together to send files from one to another.

Or is what i am doing at present quickest way ?

just seems such a lenghty process.

Just wondering if I can plug a cable from my laptop into my router and somehow send files that way, I have networking enabled of course.

if they both have network ports you could connect them using a cross over cable.

Similar to a network cable, just wired differently and allows you to connect them direct.
 
okay if a get one of those tomorrow, that is exactly what it is called then ? a cross over cable ?

And I cant leave it plugged in all the time as main pc has that plug socket going to the router, so i take it this cross over cable connects to laptop from Main pc and then how do i actually USE that cable and send files etc ?

Buy a crossover cable from your nearest dealer that does them. Any computer shop should do them.
On the back of both computers you should have something that looks like a telephone port, (it's called an RJ45 port) thats where the cable goes into from both computers.
Run the network wizard and assign private static IP addresses on the same subnet (that's important!) otherwise they won't ping each other! For example, computer A may have 192.168.16.2 /24 but using this same /24 subnet mask, computer B must also be on the network, hence 192.168.16.(what ever number you want on the last one as long as it satisfies the subnet mask)

Are you sure about the crossover stuff, recent nic's onboard and off can auto config crossover/patch, cant they?
I used a patch when i had a 2 pc network, it worked but it was better to set up the ip's static.
 
Why worry about a crossover cable?

Use a standard UTP cable from the laptop to the router, same with the PC.
The simply use Windows file sharing to move the data across.

Is that a normal cable, same as what I have from my network socket on main pc to my netgear dg834g router?

Just get one of them, plug it into laptop and into router and then:-???

HOW do i share and move files then ? I would have thought if i opened "my network places" on both computers and drag and dropped files from main rig to laptop, would it not still use wireless as the transfer method ?

I assume your router has more than one 'ethernet' port?

Get another "straight through" cat5 cable.
PC is already plugged in using one of these.
-Plug in laptop using the same method.
(Cable from lappy's NIC -> router)
-Disable the wireless on the laptop.
-Browse to your network places or Start -> Run -> \\pcname
-Copy files.

Your router will look after your IP settings etc so you'll not need to worry about them.

When finished, unplug laptop, re-enable wireless.
Job done.
 
with most network cards nowadays, you dont need a crossover cable, just a normal ethernet will do, as fizz has said
 
you say you did it before using wifi. do it the same way but plug the laptop into the switch too, it astounds me what people are coming out with here.
