One of the guys at work connects in using a 56k modem built into his laptop and after it was rebuilt as it was dog slow, it no longer works. I've brought my laptop home to see if I can connect and I'm getting exactly the same problem so it must be some stupid thing I've fogotten.

Its a basic internal modem connected on COM3. When it goes to connect it just says dialing and then eventually returns that it couldn't find a dial tone. I've tried to force it to ignore waiting for a dial tone but it doesn't work. I don't even get the little 'tick' noise that I remember from back in my modem using days to signify its opening the line. Any ideas?

Correct drivers installed or did Windows automatically install it for you?

Tried both.

Its really odd. I've tried three different laptops now with three built in adapters and one on a card and at three separate locations and all have the same problem. So I don't think its drivers, I think I'm doing something stupid.

What modem is it ? if it is a internal software modem (which is most likely it may well need an init string)

Do you get an error message ? connect via dial up networking not by just opening IE or your email program and when it fails it should then give you the error code

When it goes to connect what number does it show it is dialling ?

What OS are you on ?

What ISP you trying to connect to ?

I've tried both internal and the PCMCIA card that came with it. The error message that comes up is, iirc error 860 no dial done, no matter what number/isp etc I dial. Doesn't work through hyperterminal either. Googling the error message reveals knackered phone line or modem, and lo and behold fishing out an old PCMCIA card from the back of a draw seemed to work. I'm sure its an init string or something, as I find it hard to believe that three laptops' built in ports and one PCMCIA card are all knackered, but I got the guy going in the end.
