If the barbs are not out, the pins will be pushed out of the molex when the female section is pushed into the male.
Its not essential to get the barbs out but it does make it easier when fitting the two half's together.
As long as both male & female pins make good contact between each other there is no problem.

Okay, thank you very much mate. have connected the pump correctly. still a long way from turning it on though!
