Connecting firewire to motherboard query

I'm just installing a new motherboard, my firewire connection from my case has 15 pins, my mobo appears to have 9 pins.

Do I need to buy a converter, or can someone help me with how I connect all this up.
 
Firewire connectors are a 5x2 block of pins with one of the corner ones missing, labelled 1394 on my one. I'm pretty sure your 15 pin firewire connector isn't for firewire. Could you post a picture of it?
 
The old motherboard.. what brand was it? That cable certainly looks proprietary. The yellow plug will connect quite happily to any new motherboard, I don't think the purple one is going to. Hopefully someone recognises it but I'm not optimistic

the yellow is usb connection as the backplate has both

the old mobo was a gigabyte ga-k8nf-9, I can't remember if the backplate came with the mobo or case, but am guessing case, as otherwise you would require the backplate in order to connect up the front firewire.

Case is a 4 year olld aerocool jetmaster jr (and there's no manual anywhere).
 
Looking on the giagbyte website and in the PDF manual it seems the backplate came with the motherboard.

I have had a look but can't see an adaptor, it seems that it is a proprietary as jon has said.

If the new mobo is from a well known manufacturer I am they will do a similar backplate.
 
Good call on checking with gigabyte dave, I was too lazy to do so.

Usb backplates, and firewire backplates are certainly not rare. I think you're just going to have to get one that conforms to the atx spec. A combined usb and firewire backplate probably exists somewhere, but I've not owned one as I don't use firewire myself
