Connecting to router from modem.

Hey everyone. I recently bought my friend a desktop from ocUk it's the AMD x$ Raid. It doesn't have an on-board wifi card. Is it possible to buy a modem and plug it into the desktop and will that pick up my router downstairs and connect to the internet? The router is pretty good, don't know the specifications. So in a nut shell is it possible to connect a modem to the desktop and use that to connect to my router?

This is purely because I can't situate the dekstop by the router and use ethernet cables.

It's a wireless adapter you need, not a modem. Plenty to choose from here and here depending on whether you want USB or PCI/PCIe.

The other obvious option is a set of Powerline adapters available here.
