Connecting two computers together

I am trying to connect two computers together using a network crossover cable. The trouble is they're not connecting fully, and I get an error message telling me that the connection is only partial.

Can anybody help?

I should add that one computer has Vista Home Premium, and the other XP SP2.

I am able to find each machine on the other through "computers on same workgroup", but the trouble is it keeps asking for a password and username, which I haven't even set? :confused:

No worries, thats an easy fix.

Go into computer management - local users

Ensure that the user you login to the PC is a local admin and that you have a password.

Do the same on the other machine.

It should then work, just ensure the accounts match.

Ah crap it's as easy as that? I don't have login screens for either (which is how I like it), is there any way around this at all?

Ah ok,

On both machines go to 'Local Security Policy' (Control Panel/Admin Tools)

Go to 'Local Policys', then 'Security Options'

Look for the 3rd one down on the right..

Disable 'Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only'.

That should do the trick

Sorry, do you know the equivelent place in vista? It's not there.

Yep it is, just make sure you are in classic control panel

Hmm..I tried and looked again there, but it just isn't an option that's available.

I have sort of found a solution.

It's an open network, which means I disconnect both machines from the internet before I connect the cable between ports. Enabling the sharing of public folders in Vista i can see them on my computer and can therefore copy files over. I then have to disconnect the cable, turn off sharing, and then reconnect to my wireless internet connection.

Do you then switch to and from DHCP etc?

Your best bet would be to buy a cheap router and work that way.

No chopping and changing then?
