Connection between sound card and DVD drive

Hi All,

I have a question regarding the connection of a sound card. I remember in the old days you had to connect the CD-ROM/DVD drive to either the Mobo or the sound card via a 4-pin audio connector cable (analog) or a 2 pin SPDIF cable (digital) in order to get sound from the drive.

Having just bought a Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Champion Series (quite a mouthful), there was neither such a cable included nor does it say anything about connecting to the DVD drive. Even worse: there isn't an internal connector which you could connect the DVD drive to! However, the DVD drive clearly has the digital and analog audio connectors.

So here's the question: Do I need this connection to play audio CDs on the DVD drive and if so, where do I connect it to? If not, will this still be an optimal sound quality from the drive?

Cheers

Earlier Windows versions (95/98/ME etc) required the cable if you were using VXD based drivers. Since WDM drivers appeared they are no longer necessary and are more or less obsolete now.

Since Optical Drives supported DAE (Digital Audio Extraction) you do not need analogue cables, and the digital socket is not even for that on Pioneers, its for factory testing (so info and site claims). :)

I remember having to use this cable! :D

Took me ages to figure out why music CDs wouldn't play. :o
