Connection dropping whilst gaming

Hullo, I have a Netgear wireless router. MR814v2 to be precise.

I have my NTL broadband wired into it, the router wired into my Ethernet socket and the other PC in a separate room connected to the router via a wireless dongle.

When I play Red Alert 2 online (yes, I know it's old), I can play one game fine, then as soon as it finishes I'm left with a "trying to find server" style message. Quit the game and I've lost my internet connection completely. I have to reset my modem and do a fresh reboot to get it back again.

I don't really play any games online anymore, but I'm sure this once happened with some other games and I managed to get it sorted. Can't remember how, though.

Anybody got any ideas? I've forwarded all of the correct ports according to PortForward.com and I'm out of clues.

Cheers guys.

edit: To clarify, it seems to be the modem itself that is losing the connection. The lights stop flashing and it needs resetting.

This doesn't happen without the router involved. If I plug directly into the modem I have no such problem. However, this is a major pain because my second PC is without internet access and my family need it. :(

How old is the router?

I used to have problems with my old router when it would just lose net connection.

Bought a new one, not had problems since.

And another thing! If I idle on IRC, a similar thing happens. I don't lose internet access at the modem, but my connection does drop and I'm forced to reconnect. However, mIRC doesn't realise this until I try to say something in a channel and it disconnects me.

Are you using encryption with the wireless connection? And you're certain it's the router and not the NTL modem?

I use encryption for the wireless network yes, but it shouldn't bother me because I'm plugged in directly.

It's not the NTL modem because it doesn't happen without the router involved.

What firmware should I be aiming for?

Im getting constant drop outs i havent tried it w/o my WRT54GL (which was suppost to be the best)

NTL say my modem is fine but everything is pointing to the router.

I have a WRT54GL V1.1 i cant find firmware anywhere tho .

I get constant drop outs with my NTL cable connection as well. But I know for a fact is it the NTL modem. Because when it cuts out, I simply unplug the modem and replug it in and I immediately regain the connection.

I have a Linksys BEFSR41 wired router and a wireless WRT54G. Even when the connection drops, I am still able to access the router's admin panel which doesn't give any indication of the router crashing.
