Hi guys.

My mate has a brand new Sony vaio laptop and everything was working ok up until Saturday.

It finds the wireless network, but constantly says limited access. I can't even access the router page itself. Tried loads of different things like ipconfig /release and /renew to no avail.

When it connects to the network it is getting a 10.354.254.xx address for the ip and default gateway, and for the life of my I can't work out why.

If i set up settings manually to what they should be it works fine, as soon as I set it back to automatic it disconnects again.

Tried installing driver also.

Wtf? Please help.

EDIT: Router is fine as other devices work with it. Just wanted to try something else before i try a recovery as he said it happened after some updates, but a rollback has proved unsuccessful. System recovery is last resort.

As said, the router is fine. If I connect my phone to it it is fine, if I connect my laptop to it, it's fine.
 
well in that case are you sure it's not the laptop setup. As you can connect if you manually setup a connection (static ip I'm guessing) then all that can be wrong is something in the ip allocation of either the laptop and/or the router. If the router appears fine, then it's the laptop. End of. Go through the connection setup very carefully....it will be there somewhere. Is it such a problem to be assigned a static ip, or do they take it around with them?
 
Chuck the laptop on a static IP, making sure you're on the right subnet (;)) and try again.

Putting the router IP as your default gateway will help.
 
Yes they take it around a lot. He has backed up all his stuff today so we can have another go, might just give up and recover it tbh. Static IP all the time is not an option. I've tried EVERYTHING. I just can't get my head around it.
 
Why not put a static IP address in the "alternate configuration" page of the TCP/IP settings?

He can travel around and use DHCP when out, and have an easy static address when at home.

If all you need to do is configure the modem, then having static ip is only a temporary measure anyway :)
 
OK. This is getting on my nerves now. I done a full recovery on his laptop, and also a full hard reset on the router so we had a fresh lot of settings. It worked for all of 2 minutes then when I restarted I had to resort to using a static IP address again.

I don't understand what the issue is, I have exactly the same wireless router at my house and it connects with no issues, and my devices connect to his router with no issues. I don't understand why they won't talk :/
 
what are you using for connection? Is the laptop part of a homegroup? If it is, try making it work or home and trying again...
 
A router throws an ip like that to a client when it fails authorisation. My best guess would be the saved network profile for the network is trying to use a defunct password and/or security settings. Try explicitly removing the profile (manage wireless properties) and re-adding it. Try editing the security settings on the router (turn off completely to test)
