I ask this question because it seems the E6600 can be overclocked well beyond the X6800 stock clock speed. However, the x6800 has an unlocked multiplier. Is it worth forking out the extra for the x6800 or not?

Thanks

Not really no, the second hand value tells the tale. The extreme edition will be worth 400 - 450 second hand and the E6600 about 180. If you must have an extreme edition chip, wait for the 4 core kentsfield edition that is coming out next week. The 6800 extreme will then be obselete.

Fully agree here, I bought my X6800 for £430 brand new & sold it for £410, I'm just glad I didnt fork out £680ish for it - those really high end chips lose value like a car. E6600 is more than good value for overclocking to 3.4ghz to 3.6ghz.

Anyway whats the point in Quad Core? Hardly any games will take advantage of it, how many people run 4 intensive applications? Better to wait till it is more needed & thus within a year or so the prices will have dropped at a guess.

hmmmm.. well quad core will benefit me cos I will be using the chip for rendering images inside of Maya (thats a 3d content creation package).. the more cores the faster the render time I guess. Will it be that much more expensive than the x6800 do u recon?

I saw these quads on a few sites for pre-order a few days ago, they were in the £680-00 range. However they have since been removed again - I have no idea why.

Just did a quick scan again, they are still on some sites. Example is one site has the x6800, and the q6700 is just 11 quid more.

Intel Quad Core QX6700 4 x 2.66Ghz 8Mb Cache 1066 FSB Dual Core Processor

He, I see in most places they describe it as a dual core, even though it's listed with 4 x 2.66

Think I may actually go for one of these processors as I think it will really benefit my render times quite considerably. Might try and get one cheaper off ebay though after a few weeks having been released. £680 is steep for me at the moment, specially since just forked out for a 8800 GTX, not much left in the bank
