Ok, so I know it isn't out yet...week and a bit, but does anybody know if Conroes will be overclockable?

I'm very much an AMD boy...but as everybody is saying that Conroe is going to be better than AMDs I'm swaying that way, especialy with the prices. It makes me feel dirty!!!

I was planning on buying a DFI UT SLi-DR Expert and an AMD Opteron 165 and overclocking it to stupid speeds. Now the Conroes appear to have a better cache, come with higher clocks and lower prices (ignoring AMD's pricedrop as it hasn't happend yet so don't know how much effect it may have). The Opti 165 costs about £222 inc. VAT so I guess I could get the Conroe E6400 which costs less and does more. I'm into overclocking (on aircooling...so not huge overclocking but fair sized overclock) and would like to push the Conroe I get to 3.0Ghz or more (it is noted on the OcUK webby that the E6400 can get 3.2GHz on air).

Do people here think that the Conroes will be easily overclockable or should I just get the Opti?

Also if I get the Conroe what mobo is best? I don't understand Intel's thing where they can all run on the same mobos or something

Admitidly I won't be buying for a few months but it'd be nice to know in advance what I should be looking at. I also see that the E6600 has a 4mb cache and is that little bit more in price...would it be better to spend that little extra and get that one?

This thread is a litle ahead of it'self but if you know anything about the chips etc. please let me know. :)

Oh yeah, and if this thread should be in CPUs...move it by all means. :)

Yes, the Conroes seem to be overlclocking like mad.

I'm not quite sure which board seems to be the best. It might be worth it to wait a month or two for the motherboard market to mature a little bit so that one could more properly distill which boards offer the most performance.

It seems to me that the E6600 is the sweet-spot chip. It has the large L2 cache, a fairly large multiplier and can be overclocked nicely with good memory.
