Conroe Prices

Well there will be chipsets from the normal players (Intel, ATI, VIA, SIS). The Intel chipsets are renound for being the most solid by far, and you often pay the extra for this. I would say ATI are next and may well have a few more OCing options available. Then VIA and SIS which will be more budget aimed but will still be OK.

Ever since Intel started trying to prevent overclocking in the late 90s (multiplier locked P2s), people have been worried about intel stamping down on it and wether it will be possible with new products. But while the official intel motherboards may not allow it, there's always been plenty from 3rd parties such as Abit and Asus sporting Intel chipsets with plenty of overclocking features.

Generally speaking most people swear by Intel chipsets for Intel cpus, mainly for stability reasons. I would like to say however that I have once built an intel system with a VIA chipset (P3-650E@910) and it is still going strong today nearly 6 years later as my father's PC. Reason being that at the time I bought it, I couldn't find any good intel chipset boards with an ISA slot, and it also allows you to run memory asynchronous from FSB to some extent(uncommon on the P3 platform). So dispite the horror stories, my experience with VIA chipsets has actually been very good.

Anyway, I guess we'll have to wait and see as far as availability and pricing is concerned. In terms of actual units being available in large quantities for retail (rather than OEMs) I'd be suprised if we can get our mits on these before July. In terms of pricing of course we also need to consider the motherboards - most guys looking to overclock will probably need to be laying down in excess of 100 notes for the mobo I'd imagine, and then possibly some more for DDR2 RAM if they are moving from an A64 platform. So when you add everything up, a move to Conroe could prove quite expensive.
