Considering buying an ipod touch. Want to know how easy it is to add music and video (without itunes). I have videos in various formats .avi .mp4 .mkv so I'm guess I'd have to convert them somehow. Before my old nano broke, I used winamp to manage the music on it. Is there anything better, that doesn't involve me using itunes?

Sharepod
Media Monkey
Winamp and the ml_ipod plugin
CopyTransManager

I've only used Sharepod. You can add .avi with applications such as vlc player or cinexplayer (i'm sure one of them is for ipod touches/iPhones as originally they were iPad apps

While I do like using itunes for getting podcasts, it does not work well for me as a way of syncing music. It doesn't give me the control I want. Syncing is frustratingly irritating and I'm sure all the usual complaints encompass my views as well. For video, I've never actually used itunes, but I suspect it doesn't handle .mkv very well.

Thats good to hear there is a vlc player app for the touch. How easy is it to get the files onto the device?

Also, have apple ever released a wifi syncing?

No WiFi syncing -- can with jailbreak -- still don't see the point

With VLC player/Cinexplayer -- its as simple as drop and drop to the 'application'
You do need iTunes for this bit though. Load up iTunes, go into applications, scroll to the bottom and it will say like File sharing or something. VLC player will be there with a box on the right. Drag and drop into the box

You can also skip backups and all that rubbish when iTunes loads, but will want to transfer purchases most likely.
