Considering a 24" monitor

If HDMI is the only reason for upgrading then why not keep your current monitor if you're happy with it. Add a HDMI switch box and get a HDMI to DVI cable to connect the switch to your monitor. Your probably looking at about £30 tops for all of that.

I'm in the market for exactly the same thing and I'm considering the LG W2442PE. Gets really good reviews, the key feature over the Iiyama is that it has a fully adjustable stand!

If I were you though Fox I'd do the above and just get a switch + hdmi to dvi.

I always heard ms response times are just marketing hype.

Well that's not really true. A monitor that states 16ms is almost certainly going to give far more blur when displaying movement.

Some manufacturers are however quite optimistic/bend the truth when it comes to response time, so watch out for that and read a decent review/get feedback from owners.

I have used an older series Iiyama 2407HDS with 1vga 1 dvi one hdmi before i switched to the 32'' tv.

It's fine for gaming and films, my only issue with it was that it made a (silent) squeek when plugged in to the power after a while ( whether it was off, or in standby, power meant high pitched squeek, though only audible when completely silent ie. at night), it only didn't do it when it was on and showing something on screen), a simple socket with power switch fixed the issue though and I can't really fault the screen otherwise, it went downstairs to my parents to use.

I thought there'd be more catches to the cheap price of the iiyama screens but from mine I couldn't find them really.

the Dell is an IPS panel, not the cheaper TN type.

I have the earlier model (Dell 2408) and its has card readers, 4 USB ports, DP, DVI, VGA, HDMI, component, S-video and composite.

Basically, better panel and lots of features.

There is also the fully adjustable stand, which can do pretty much anything! Portrait, Landscape modes, swivel, tilt, higher/lower adjustments..

But if I don't notice whatever is supposed to be wrong with cheaper TN panels it would seem a bit pointless to spend the extra?

True, unless you're watching lots of movies as well as doing photography and video editing, I would say its difficult to justify the cost unless you have the money for it.

Response time is mostly important for people who play games lots and like everything to be perfect. On modern monitors, the differences in the timings aren't that big of deal IMO. I used to game 5+ hours a day on my old Dell 2407, which supposedly has a response time which is bad for gaming, yet I was totally fine with it.

Some models are conservative with their response time figures too, some only state the G2G not the B2B and vice versa.

16ms on some panels looks perfectly good compared to other monitors. Only way to really find out is read a review of it where the reviewer does the usual response time/motion/ghosting tests.

IPS isn't important for someone who isn't bothered about colour accuracy or picture quality, but TBH I'd recommend a VA based screen instead of an IPS to such a buyer as TN has the awful colour shifting as you look at it from different angles.

LED backlit screens look great (the monitor itself) as they're so thin but they're way too bright from what I've tried. Even on the lowest brightness it's too bright. This might just be myself as all my monitors are calibrated to 120cd/m2 (the standard accepted luminance for comfortable viewing) so anything brighter than this automatically is too bright to my eyes and uncomfortable.

Having said that though, my 2nd monitor is a TN panel Samsung, it too is calibrated but the colour shifting is annoying although I only ever look at it when changing music tracks or paying attention to sidebar gadgets :p

What do we think of the iiyama E2472HD-1?
Beware this may not have a 'source' button and hide that feature in the osd somewhere. My e2x10HDs doesn't and manually switching between inputs is beyond tiresome.

That would be hugely annoying. My 2201 has a big 'source' button right on the front panel.

I'm looking at maybe changing my 22" 2209WA for a higher resolution, still undecided whether to go dual screen. But I'm curious why nobody has recommended the:

ViewSonic VP2365wb 23" Premium IPS Panel Widescreen LCD Monitor £203.99 inc VAT (this week only offer).

There is a good comparison of the 23"ers at http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/viewsonic_vp2365wb.htm (at the bottom). Bit disappointing it doesn't have HDMI but as far as the panel goes it's pretty impressive.

Probably because it's ViewSonic

Viewsonic have a pretty good reputation as far as I'm aware, however my girlfriend has that monitor and although the colours are very good, the overall picture is dull. It hasn't got a great response time either which causes noticable ghosting. It has great viewing angles though, so no problem lying down on the bed watching films from a lower viewing angle.

Am I fussy if I say I dont want a glossy bezel? Glossy plastic annoys me to death.

Sadly it seems the new Iiyamas are all glossy bezels :(

You're certainly not alone there! I much prefer the business styling of a matt stand and bezel as well as a matt panel. I've seen some very dusty glossy monitors!

I prefer business instead of glossy as well.

I seriously am giving up looking, I'm coming close to just ordering the U2311H and justifying the price on thinking how long it will last me for.

I have a Dell UltraSharp 24" which is an IPS panel it's very good but you do pay twice as much for it. I would get the same again, anything else I put next to it would disappoint.

That said - if you don't already own an IPS panel, and viewing angles don't really matter - then go ahead with a TN panel. I've heard good things about Samsung - but I doubt it matters much.
